Air Tahiti Nui, the international airline of French Polynesia, has signed an agreement with SpaceX to fit Starlink satellite Wi-Fi across its long-haul fleet, and says passengers in every cabin will get it free.
“Air Tahiti Nui and SpaceX have signed an agreement to equip our entire Boeing 787-9 fleet with Starlink Wi-Fi,” the airline said in a release from Papeete on 3 November. Starlink shared the news on X, quoting the airline’s own post.
In brief
- Air Tahiti Nui will fit Starlink Wi-Fi to its entire Boeing 787-9 fleet.
- Wi-Fi will be free in all travel classes, from takeoff to landing.
- The airline says the rollout is “expected in 2027” and has not given a completion date.
What the Air Tahiti Nui Starlink deal covers
The airline promises “ultra-high-speed, low-latency connectivity (25–30 ms)”, available “from takeoff to landing” and free “in all travel classes”. It also promises “reliable global coverage”, including “over the oceans and the most remote areas of the planet”.
The airline says the service should make the flight “as seamless as your everyday connection”, whether passengers want to “contact your loved ones, check your social media, work, play online or watch your favorite movies and TV shows”. Latency of 25 to 30 milliseconds is low enough for video calls and online games, uses that older in-flight systems often struggled with.
On timing, the airline says only: “The rollout of Starlink on board our aircraft is expected in 2027.” It has not said how many aircraft will be fitted first, when the last will be done, or which routes will get the service first. The release covers the Boeing 787-9, which the airline flies on its long-haul network.
Air Tahiti Nui presents the move as catching up with the rest of the industry. By “adopting this new technological standard”, it says, it is “aligning our service offering with the industry’s best practices”. It describes the service as part of its “overall development strategy” and says it is responding to passenger feedback. The release does not mention the cost of the deal or its length.
Starlink reaches aircraft through SpaceX’s constellation of satellites in low Earth orbit. They sit far closer to the ground than the geostationary satellites behind older in-flight Wi-Fi systems, which is where the lower latency comes from. That also matters on routes across open ocean, where ground-based networks cannot reach and coverage depends entirely on satellites.
Why Air Tahiti Nui Starlink matters for remote routes
For most airlines, onboard Wi-Fi is a comfort. For an airline based in Tahiti, it is closer to a lifeline for passengers’ working lives. Air Tahiti Nui’s long-haul flights link one of the most isolated island groups in the world with cities on other continents, and much of each journey is over the Pacific, far from land. A free, fast connection for that whole time changes what a business traveller or a family can do on board.
The deal also adds to a clear run of airline wins for Starlink. TSN reported this week that easyJet will add Starlink Wi-Fi from 2027, its first onboard internet, and that Japan Airlines credited Starlink and pricing for a 12.3% passenger revenue rise at ZIPAIR. Free Wi-Fi in every class, rather than paid tiers, is becoming the way airlines sell the service. More on Elon Musk’s businesses is on TSN’s Musk Companies hub.
For Air Tahiti Nui, the offer is also part of how it competes for travellers choosing how to reach French Polynesia. Long flights are a big part of any trip to the islands, and a connected cabin can make that time easier to sell, both to holidaymakers and to people who need to keep working on the way. Free access in every class also means the airline is treating Wi-Fi as part of the ticket, not an extra charge on top.
The questions now are practical: when the first Air Tahiti Nui aircraft is fitted in 2027, and how quickly the rest follow.
