Saildrone and Umoe Sign Surveyor V3 Production Deal

Saildrone and Norwegian shipbuilder Umoe Mandal have signed a production agreement for the next-generation Saildrone Surveyor unmanned surface vehicle, with the signing at Euronaval 2026 in Paris on 4 November 2026, Saildrone said and Umoe Mandal confirmed in matching announcements. Saildrone presents the deal as formalising a manufacturing partnership announced earlier in the year.

Under the deal, Umoe Mandal will manufacture Surveyor USVs in Norway. Saildrone supplies the autonomy, navigation, electronics and sensing stack. Both companies cast the partnership as European industrial capacity for persistent maritime domain awareness — monitoring shipping corridors and waters around critical undersea infrastructure — with sovereign control of operations and data for Northern European navies. Saildrone describes Surveyor as an extreme-endurance platform meant to operate alongside traditional naval and surveillance assets so those assets can focus elsewhere.

In brief

  • Production agreement signed at Euronaval 2026, Paris, 4 November.
  • Umoe Mandal builds Surveyor V3 in Norway; Saildrone provides autonomy and sensors.
  • Aimed at Baltic, North Sea and Arctic maritime surveillance for European customers.

What each side brings

Robert Kleist, managing director of Saildrone Europe, said the agreement is “an investment in serving European customers over the long term, working with partners on European soil,” and that Surveyor will cover strategically important waters including the Baltic and North Seas and Arctic waters while giving customers sovereign control over operations and data. Tom Fidjeland, CEO of Umoe Mandal, said there is a “strong strategic fit” between Saildrone’s technology and Umoe’s experience in advanced maritime platforms and composite construction, contributing to European capacity for uncrewed maritime systems. On Umoe’s page, Kleist separately calls Norwegian composite and high-performance vessel expertise a natural partner for the next Surveyor generation, with sovereign production capacity closer to European customers.

Umoe’s page names the product Surveyor V3 and places the build inside Saildrone’s wider European expansion: headquarters in Copenhagen and manufacturing partnerships in Norway, Poland and the Netherlands. Umoe also situates the work beside its other naval structures work, including mast structures for Type 26 frigates. Saildrone’s release adds that the companies will explore further manufacture, integration and support of Saildrone platforms in Europe, and notes a year-long Swedish Navy maritime surveillance mission under the Nordic Defence Cooperation framework using Voyager USVs — adjacent context, not this production contract.

Surveillance hulls are becoming European industrial policy

Uncrewed surface vehicles sit in the same procurement weather as other sensor and platform deals TSN has tracked this week and month: Saildrone’s MUSV bid-protest win in the US Court of Federal Claims, and Shield’s $5.3bn agreement to buy Echodyne for counter-drone radar, while UK proposals on subsea cable sabotage show how seriously governments now treat undersea infrastructure risk. Surveyor is pitched for exactly that monitoring gap — coverage first across large ocean areas, then cueing other assets — built under a Norwegian composite yard rather than imported as a finished US hull.

For UK readers, the near-term relevance is industrial geography and data sovereignty language, not a Royal Navy order form in today’s releases. A Surveyor built in Norway for Northern European navies is the kind of sovereign-production story MoD and industry partners watch when undersea infrastructure monitoring is on the agenda; neither primary names a UK buy.

A signed yard deal is not a filled order book

The confirmed facts are the Euronaval signing, the Norway build role, and the autonomy/sensing split. Production rate and order-book status are not stated in the Saildrone or Umoe primaries used here, so any monthly output figures circulating in secondary press are left out of this account. What the companies did put on the record is industrial geography: a US autonomy firm locking a Norwegian composite yard into Surveyor V3, with sovereign-operations language aimed at Northern European naval customers.

That distinction matters for readers who conflate a production agreement with a multi-hull navy contract. A yard mandate can sit for months before the first funded hull steel or composite layup. Watch next for named navy customers tied to Surveyor V3 hull numbers, keel-laying or first-of-class photos from Mandal, and whether the “explore additional opportunities” line becomes a second platform line. Until then, the Saildrone Surveyor story is a European manufacturing agreement for a maritime-surveillance USV — signed paper, sovereign framing, and a yard still ahead of delivery theatre.
