You do not have to go looking for AI. It is already in the search box, the phone, the document you are writing, and the speaker in the kitchen. What it is not, yet, is the thing that finishes the job. A person still has to check the draft, wait for the car, or decide the answer was wrong.
That is the shape of everyday AI in 2026. It has moved into tools people already open. It has not taken the last step.
It Is Already Where You Work
On 27 January 2026, Google made Gemini 3 the default model behind AI Overviews, globally. A follow-up question on a phone opens AI Mode, and that is global too. Google's own help page, which does not carry a publication date, says Overviews cannot be switched off, and that they can and will make mistakes. The answer sits at the top of the results. Turning it off is not an option the page offers.
Apple's next generation of Apple Intelligence was available on 14 September 2026, on iPhone 16 and later, and on iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, if the phone is running iOS 27. Siri's newer AI is still a beta. It is English first, it is not initially available in the EU, and the features that run on a server have daily limits.
Microsoft's agentic Copilot reached general availability in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint on 22 April 2026. In Word it drafts, rewrites, and restructures. Microsoft's own description of the next step is more reliable editing of high-stakes work. That is a roadmap, not a result from a test.
In customer service, Intercom's Fin for Ecommerce went live for Shopify on 7 May 2026. Intercom's own figure is more than a million queries a week, across more than 8,000 businesses. That number is the company's. A Gartner survey published on 8 July 2026 found something less tidy. Use of company-provided chatbots was statistically unchanged since 2022. Use of third-party generative AI during a service interaction had nearly doubled. Only 24 percent of 1,303 service leaders reported a positive financial return. The customer side of that survey was 3,566 people, interviewed in February and March 2026.
It Is Already in the Street, the Kitchen, and the Clinic
Waymo opened Houston on 20 August 2026. In Dallas, as of 4 August 2026, you no longer need an invite code. Denver, Tampa, and San Diego were still on a waitlist as of 1 September 2026. A ride you can hail in one city is a waiting list in the next.
Alexa+, in an update dated 21 July 2026, is available to all customers in the United States and Canada. It is free with Prime, or $19.99 a month. In the UK, and in several other countries, it is early access, not a general release. Amazon's talk of booking things without you in the loop is future tense. It was not checked as a live feature.
Medicine is further along on paper than it is at the bedside. The US Food and Drug Administration, on a page current as of 22 September 2026, says it has authorized more than 1,600 AI-enabled medical devices for marketing in the United States. Authorized for marketing is not the same as generally available. In Britain, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency said on 29 July 2026 that NHS scribes which only draft a note for a clinician to review are not medical devices. The clinician still has to check the transcript. Stanford Medicine, on 15 January 2026, reported that a review of more than 500 studies found only 5 percent had used real patient data. That 5 percent is the news article's account. The underlying paper was not opened for this piece.
NHS England said on 8 June 2026 that 505,000 staff are to get Copilot for admin work, with the rollout expected by October 2026. Any figure for time saved is NHS England's, not an independent count.
Half of Adults, and a School System That Said Not Yet
Pew Research Center, in a report published on 17 June 2026, found that 49 percent of 5,119 US adults use a chatbot. Fifty-one percent do not. Pew's 2024 figure was 33 percent, but the question was worded differently, so the two numbers are not a clean before-and-after.
Schools are not moving as one. From 10 August 2026, Google has been offering Gemini inside Google Classroom where an administrator already allows it. Google says the outputs can be wrong. New York City went the other way. On 2 September 2026 it announced a one-year moratorium on student-facing generative AI, covering nearly 600,000 students.
What It Still Does Not Do
The pattern is the same in each of these. The tool drafts, suggests, or shows up in the place you were already going. Someone else closes the loop.
Search will put an answer above the links, and Google says that answer can be wrong. Word will restructure a document, and Microsoft says reliable editing of high-stakes work is the next step, not the current one. A support bot will take the query, and most of the service leaders in Gartner's survey had not seen the money come back. A scribe will write the clinic note, and a person still has to read it. A car will pick you up in Houston, and not yet in Denver.
The Bottom Line
AI in 2026 is already in the tools people use. About half of American adults in Pew's survey use a chatbot, and about half do not. The products above are real, dated, and narrower than the pitch. None of them, on the pages checked for this piece, is the step that finishes the job.
