Musk's Companies: SpaceX, SpaceXAI, Tesla and X

Elon Musk’s businesses are now closely linked. SpaceX acquired xAI in February, with CNBC and Reuters reporting a combined value of $1.25 trillion, and listed in June after pricing its shares at $135. The AI arm now operates under the SpaceXAI name and sells Grok, Grok Bot and Cursor alongside X Premium in a single subscription. Tesla invested about $2 billion in xAI, and Musk says Tesla and SpaceX will build and run Terafab, a giant AI chip plant in Texas.

Why it matters: these companies touch launch, satellite internet, cars, social media and frontier AI at once. TSN separates what the companies confirm from what Musk claims on X. His pledge to give one SpaceX share to every child in America, and his view that Optimus and Cybercab will be the vast majority of Tesla’s value, are his claims, with no mechanism or figures attached.

Where things stand: Starship reached orbit for the first time on 28 September, and Musk says the next flight will try to catch the ship itself, with no date from SpaceX. Tesla delivered 486,532 vehicles in the third quarter, reports results on 21 October and holds its annual meeting on 3 December, where Musk is up for re-election to the board. It showed its redesigned Roadster in Texas and says it will build the car in 2028.

The legal and regulatory pressure is mounting too. A judge has let the US government join, but not end, the NAACP’s Clean Air Act suit over the power plant behind an xAI data centre. Ofcom told MPs it weighed a court order over Grok deepfakes, MLex reported. Starlink is still waiting to sell in India, and US lawmakers want an inquiry into a reported Starlink disruption in Ukraine.
