Tether Blacklisted Four THORChain Vaults on Tron, Then Lifted It About Three Hours Later

On 9 October 2026 four addresses belonging to THORChain, a network for swapping coins across blockchains, were put on the USDT blacklist on the Tron blockchain, and taken off it about three hours later. Tron’s public records confirm that. THORChain’s co-founder says the team had no contact from Tether first, and TSN found no explanation from Tether.

What the on-chain records show

Confirmed (Tron records, TSN check). USDT on Tron has a blacklist: an address on it cannot send USDT out, though the balance stays at the address. TSN read the USDT contract’s own blacklist events. Four addresses were added in Tron block 86958330, timestamped 12:09 UTC (13:09 London), and removed in blocks 86962347 to 86962349 at 15:30 UTC (16:30 London) [1]. That is 3 hours 21 minutes apart. THORNode, THORChain’s public node interface, lists six active vaults with Tron addresses. These four are four of those six; the other two do not appear in the blacklist events [2].

The records show no USDT leaving the four addresses between listing and removal. Two received deposits while listed (the largest about 14,000 USDT), because blacklisting blocks sending, not receiving [1]. The records show what happened, not who ordered it or why.

What is reported

Reported. Cointelegraph, Crypto Briefing and The Defiant say Tether blacklisted the vaults, freezing “about a combined 1.45 million USDT” across four wallets, and that THORChain paused Tron swaps and liquidity-provider operations until the blacklist was lifted at 15:30 UTC [3][4][5]. TSN’s own rough reconstruction from public Tron data (balances less later transfers) gives about 1.43 million USDT when the addresses were listed and about 1.45 million just before removal. That is TSN’s approximation, not a Tether or THORChain figure [1].

Reported (THORChain co-founder). Chad Barraford wrote on X: “It appears that USDT has chosen to blacklist THORChain vaults of USDT on the TRON blockchain” [6]. In a follow-up he said: “We don’t know why this choice was made and have had no comms with USDT before this action and are actively reaching out to have a conversation. We hope that this was made in error / misunderstanding” [7]. Later he wrote: “It appears @tether has unfrozen THORChain addresses. Trading/etc will resume soon” [8]. These are one party’s statements.

Unconfirmed: the reason. Cointelegraph said it asked Tether and THORChain for comment and had no immediate reply [3]. None of the reports TSN read carries a Tether explanation, and TSN found no Tether statement. Why the addresses were listed, and why they were removed, is not known.

“Frozen” is not “taken”

A blacklist stops an address sending USDT. It does not move the funds. On the records TSN read, no USDT left the four addresses while they were listed, and reports say balances came back intact [4]. Nothing in the sources says Tether seized, redeemed or took control of any of it.

What this does not prove

  • Why Tether acted. No source gives a reason, and TSN does not guess one.
  • That Tether made the listing or the removal. The events show the addresses were listed and removed. Outlets and THORChain attribute both to Tether, and Tether has not commented in anything TSN found.
  • The exact amount at risk. “About 1.45 million USDT” is a reported figure and TSN’s reconstruction is approximate.
  • That this was “unprecedented”. That is Barraford’s view, not a finding.

The Bottom Line

Tron’s records confirm that four of THORChain’s six Tron vaults were put on the USDT blacklist for about three hours on 9 October 2026 and then released, with the funds staying in place. The size of the freeze, the pause to Tron swaps and the lack of any warning are reported, mostly from THORChain’s side. Tether’s reasons are unknown. For anyone using USDT in a protocol, the plain lesson is that the issuer holds this switch.
