SpaceX launched 21 satellites built by Northrop Grumman for the US Space Development Agency (SDA) on 10 October 2026, five days after a countdown abort. Northrop and the SDA both confirm the launch. They join a military data-relay network that the SDA says will give initial capability from 2027.
What is confirmed
Confirmed (Northrop Grumman and the SDA). Northrop says: “Twenty-one satellites built by Northrop Grumman (NYSE: NOC) were successfully launched and deployed for the Space Development Agency’s (SDA) Tranche 1 Transport Layer (T1TL) satellite communications network.” [1] The SDA’s own release says a Falcon 9 “delivered 21 data transport T1 space vehicles (SVs), built by Northrop Grumman”, bringing the total in orbit to 84 [2]. Northrop adds: “This marks the first in a series of Northrop Grumman’s Tranche 1 launches. The second plane of 21 satellites is planned to follow.” [1] It says it is “building approximately 150 space vehicles for Tranches 1, 2 and 3” [1].
What the network is
The SDA is a US Space Force agency. It describes its Transport Layer as a constellation of satellites in low Earth orbit (750 to 1,200 km up) that will be “interconnected with Optical Inter-Satellite Links”, meaning laser links between satellites [3]. In plain terms, it is a mesh of many satellites relaying data between them. A “tranche” is one generation of satellites, and a “plane” is a group sharing one ring-shaped orbit. Each launch here fills one plane. The SDA says Tranche 1 provides initial capability “beginning in 2027” [2].
The launch details
Reported (Space.com). The rocket lifted off from Vandenberg Space Force Base, California, on 10 October at 0739 GMT (08:39 in London) [4]. On 5 October, “the Falcon 9 aborted that attempt in the countdown’s final minute, for reasons that the company has not disclosed” [4]. Spaceflight Now reports SpaceX cited “some off-nominal data on Stage Two” [5]. Space.com says it was “the fourth of nine” SpaceX launches for Tranche 1 and the 111th Falcon 9 flight of the year. Booster 1103 flew for the sixth time and landed [4]. The webcast ended early “at the request of the SDA” [4].
The numbers
According to the SDA, as reported by Space.com, Tranche 1 will have 126 transport and 28 tracking satellites plus four missile-defence test satellites [4]. Space.com says “Eighty-four of the 126 data-transport satellites have now launched” [4]. The SDA’s own release gives the same total of 84 [2].
What this does not show
- A working network. The sources describe launch and deployment, not performance. The SDA says capability begins in 2027 [2].
- Independent confirmation of deployment. Space.com’s report ended before deployment news. That comes from Northrop’s release, which is the company’s own account.
- The abort cause. Space.com says it was undisclosed; Spaceflight Now relays SpaceX’s brief explanation.
