Both companies announced this on 12 October. It is a memorandum of understanding (MOU), a statement of plans, not a signed commercial contract. No value has been disclosed.
NAVER Cloud, the cloud arm of South Korea’s internet company NAVER, and Vietnamese IT group FPT have signed an MOU to expand their “AI Factory” business across Asia-Pacific and into global markets [1][2].
Under the plan, the two companies will “work toward offering NAVER Cloud’s hyperscale AI model, HyperCLOVA X, to FPT’s enterprise customers through FPT AI Factory,” FPT said [1].
NAVER said the companies will jointly pursue AI Factory and GPUaaS business in Asia-Pacific markets including Korea, Japan and Vietnam, and will jointly discuss how to plan, develop and operate it [2].
Key terms explained
- MOU (memorandum of understanding): a written agreement setting out what two companies intend to do together. It is usually not legally binding on money or volumes. A firm commercial contract may or may not follow.
- GPUaaS (GPU as a service): renting access to graphics processors (GPUs), the chips used to train and run AI models, over the cloud instead of buying and running the hardware yourself.
- AI Factory: the industry’s name, popularised by NVIDIA, for a data centre built to train and run AI at scale. FPT AI Factory is FPT’s AI cloud platform, which FPT says is “Powered by NVIDIA technologies” [1].
- HyperCLOVA X: NAVER’s own large language model, the kind of AI that powers chatbots.
What the companies plan to do
- Find customers together. NAVER says the two will look for demand in regions neither could easily serve alone, offering infrastructure, AI models and AI services to companies that need GPU computing for large-scale AI training and inference [2].
- Offer HyperCLOVA X through FPT. FPT says the companies will work toward making NAVER’s model available to FPT’s enterprise customers [1].
- Share engineers. The companies will run regular technical exchange programmes involving FPT engineers and staff from NAVER Cloud’s Vietnam Development Center and headquarters. Joint teams will work with customers “from optimizing GPU infrastructure and inference performance to deploying AI agents in production” [1].
“Building on both companies’ technology and business strengths, we will go beyond Korea and Vietnam to address customers’ diverse AI needs across the APAC market,” said Yuwon Kim, CEO of NAVER Cloud [1].
Le Hong Viet, CEO of FPT Smart Cloud, said FPT looks forward “to working with NAVER Cloud to bring AI models closer to enterprise customers” [1].
What FPT says about itself (FPT’s claims)
FPT says its AI Factories in Japan and Vietnam “ranked 36th and 38th, respectively, among the world’s most powerful supercomputing systems.” It does not say which ranking, and TSN has not checked it [1].
FPT also says its AI cloud platform serves “more than 18,000 AI developers and over 2,000 enterprises worldwide” [1]. These figures are FPT’s own.
What we don’t know
- No money figures. Neither company disclosed a deal value, revenue target or number of GPUs.
- No timeline. Neither release says when HyperCLOVA X will be available through FPT AI Factory.
- Exact signing date. NAVER says the MOU was signed “recently” at NAVER 1784, its headquarters building; both announcements are dated 12 October [2].
