Interactive Brokers Launches Ethereum Staking for Eligible Clients, Provided by zerohash

Based on Interactive Brokers’ press release, published on Business Wire.

Interactive Brokers (Nasdaq: IBKR), the online broker, now lets some clients stake their cryptocurrency and earn rewards. The service is provided by zerohash, a crypto infrastructure company [1].

At launch, only Ethereum can be staked, and only by eligible clients of Interactive Brokers LLC, the firm’s US broker. They do it through a Staking Dashboard in IBKR’s Client Portal, where they can ask to stake or unstake and track pending requests [1].

“Availability of products varies by Interactive Brokers affiliate and client country of residence,” the company said. So whether you can use it depends on which IBKR company holds your account and where you live [1].

What is staking?

Ethereum is run by computers that check and add new transactions. To take part, they lock up, or “stake”, some ether as a guarantee that they will play by the rules. In return they earn new ether as rewards. Staking through a provider lets ordinary holders put their coins to work this way without running the equipment themselves.

At IBKR, rewards, “when earned,” are paid as extra staked ether, and “can compound while the position remains staked” [1]. Rewards are not guaranteed.

What IBKR says

“Similar to how our Stock Yield Enhancement Program allows clients to earn additional income on shares they own, staking gives clients an opportunity to earn rewards on the cryptocurrency they own,” said Milan Galik, Chief Executive Officer of Interactive Brokers. “We want clients to earn more from the assets they hold” [1].

The release also sets out IBKR’s wider crypto offer [1]:

  • Trading costs: commissions from 0.12% to 0.18% of the trade value, with a USD 1.75 minimum per order. IBKR says it charges “up to 85% less than competitors” to trade crypto. That is a COMPANY CLAIM; TSN has not checked it.
  • 20 coins to trade, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, Canton and Sui.
  • Stablecoin funding: clients can fund accounts and send assets out using USDC, RLUSD and PYUSD.

IBKR warns that trading digital assets “is especially risky and is only for individuals with a high-risk tolerance and the financial ability to sustain losses” [1].

What this means

  • A big broker adds staking. IBKR clients who qualify can now earn rewards on ether they hold, in the same account as their stocks.
  • Ethereum only, for now. The release speaks of “supported digital assets” but names only Ethereum at launch.
  • Not everyone can use it. It depends on your IBKR affiliate and country.
