SolarWinds, the IT management software company, has launched Avior, an AI system that it says can carry out routine IT operations work on its own, within limits set by human teams.
SolarWinds announced Avior on 14 October 2026 in a press release. The company describes it as a standalone, goal-oriented agentic AI system. Agentic AI means software that can take actions to reach a goal, not just answer questions. SolarWinds did not disclose pricing, SiliconANGLE reported.
What Avior does
According to SolarWinds, IT teams set goals and Avior works towards them. At launch, it can:
- reduce alert noise, by merging related alerts into a single incident;
- reduce compliance violations, by checking devices against a policy baseline;
- fix configuration drift, by restoring the last-known-good settings;
- make sure configuration backups are taken on schedule;
- track capacity and spending; and
- clean up old records for devices that no longer exist.
Avior works across SolarWinds products and connects to other companies’ systems through the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard for linking AI to tools, SolarWinds says. It works with both self-hosted and cloud setups without a data migration.
Keeping humans in control
SolarWinds says Avior has “risk-tiered autonomy so that potentially dangerous actions always require explicit human approval.” Each action runs with the permissions of the person who started it and is logged, SiliconANGLE reported. SolarWinds says customer data is masked and not used to train the underlying AI models.
SolarWinds Chief Technology Officer Krishna Sai told SiliconANGLE the design grounds “probabilistic models in deterministic execution.” In plain terms, the AI works out what needs doing, but a fixed framework of goals and approval rules controls how it gets done.
“IT operations have long been measured by how quickly teams can respond,” said Cullen Childress, SolarWinds’ interim CEO and chief product officer. “But as environments become more complex, distributed, and noisy, reaction time alone is no longer enough.”
Not the same as last year’s AI Agent
Avior is separate from the AI Agent SolarWinds put into a tech preview for its Observability SaaS product in October 2025. SiliconANGLE reported that the earlier tools work inside individual products, while Avior runs as its own application across a company’s IT estate.
Avior is available from 14 October 2026 through a guided onboarding programme, SolarWinds says.
What this means
- AI agents are moving into IT operations. SolarWinds wants Avior to take on first-line work that engineers do today.
- Control is the selling point. SolarWinds stresses approval steps and audit logs for risky actions.
- Cost is unknown. SolarWinds has not said what Avior costs.
