YouTube Music Starts Labelling Songs Made Mainly With AI

YouTube Music has started adding labels to songs that were made mostly with generative AI. “Starting today, YouTube Music is rolling out labels to make it easier to see when a song was created primarily using generative AI,” YouTube said in a blog post on 14 October 2026.

YouTube gives an example of what counts: “this includes using a generative model to create the composition and vocals.” The labels are for songs where AI did most of the work, not every song that used AI in some way.

How the labels work

“When you listen to a track on YouTube Music where AI played a significant role, you’ll see a label directly on the player page,” YouTube said. “Tapping the label opens a simple menu that shares more information.” According to The Verge, the label reads “Made with AI”.

YouTube says it is “teaming up with music partners and using our own detection tools to identify AI-generated tracks”, applying the same labelling principles it already uses across YouTube. The Verge reports that YouTube’s rules for music partners explain how to disclose generative AI use. If a partner does not disclose it, YouTube may use “other signals” to decide whether a song is AI-generated.

YouTube says the labels will also come to the main YouTube app. It has not given a date.

Why YouTube is doing this

“Our listeners have told us they want transparency when they’re hearing an AI-generated track,” YouTube said.

Other services are taking their own steps, as The Verge notes. Spotify launched a voluntary AI label earlier this year, and Apple Music is reportedly getting an AI tag. Deezer added a switch that lets listeners filter out AI tracks, and Bandcamp banned AI music outright.

What this means

  • Listeners get a clearer signal. Songs made mainly with AI will be marked on the player screen.
  • Not every AI use is labelled. The labels cover songs where AI played a significant role.
  • More to come. The labels will reach the main YouTube app, though YouTube has not said when.
