Patrick Witt Leaves White House Crypto Council Executive Director Role

Patrick Witt has left his post as executive director of the White House Crypto Council. A White House official told The Block on 14 October 2026 that his “detail has expired,” and added: “The White House appreciates his time and service to the Trump Administration, and wish him the best of luck in the future endeavors.”

On 15 October, Witt posted his own statement on X. TSN verified that post through the X API (status 2110579591073104355 from @patrickjwitt, created 15 October 2026 at 03:52 UTC).

What Witt said

In the verified post, Witt said serving in the administration had been “the privilege of a lifetime,” and listed roles including helping with the presidential transition, work as PTDO Deputy Under Secretary for Research and Engineering and Acting Director of OSC at the Department of War, and serving as Executive Director of the White House Crypto Council to advance the goal of making the United States the “crypto capital of the world.”

He thanked President Trump, David Sacks for “visionary leadership and mentorship,” and a long list of colleagues across the administration. On crypto legislation, he thanked regulators and members of Congress “for your partnership in advancing crypto policy over the past year with the passage of the GENIUS Act and our work to advance the CLARITY Act.”

On next steps, he wrote: “I’ll have to more to share soon.” He closed: “I’m grateful to have done my part to unleash American innovation while in government, and I look forward to advancing that same mission in the private sector!”

Context from The Block

The Block reported that Witt led efforts to pass broad crypto market-structure legislation known as the Clarity Act as executive director for the President’s Council of Advisors for Digital Assets. The House passed its version more than a year ago; Witt later worked on Senate negotiations. The Block said the Senate version stalled over fights including stablecoin rewards, ethics, and language related to President Trump’s crypto holdings, and that a procedural vote failed last month.

Reporting from Crypto In America’s Eleanor Terrett, cited by The Block, said Witt is a Department of Defense employee who held a temporary detail at the White House Crypto Council.

Witt is the third top crypto lead to leave the White House in 2026, The Block said: David Sacks left in March after saying his 130 days as a special government employee were up, and Witt’s deputy Harry Jung left in July. The White House did not answer The Block’s questions about a successor.

Industry groups praised Witt’s work. Blockchain Association chief policy officer Lindsay Fraser said the industry “wouldn’t be where it is today without Patrick Witt.” Solana Policy Institute president Kristin Smith said building consensus on market structure “was no small task.”

Why it matters

US crypto market-structure legislation remains unfinished even after the GENIUS Act’s passage. Losing the White House Crypto Council’s executive director, without a named replacement, removes a central negotiator just as Senate talks have been difficult. For exchanges, stablecoin issuers and tokenisation projects watching Washington, the practical question is who now runs day-to-day engagement with Capitol Hill on Clarity.

TSN has separately covered related regulatory threads, including Coinbase and Deribit access questions, European and UK tokenisation rules, and ETF withdrawals such as VanEck’s Lido staked ETH filing — all part of a crowded policy year.

What is still unknown

The White House has not named a successor. Witt has not said which private-sector role he will take. The Block’s account of why Clarity stalled is political reporting, not a formal WH statement beyond the detail-expired line.

What to watch next

  • Whether the White House names a new Crypto Council executive director
  • Whether Witt announces a private-sector role
  • Any restart of Senate Clarity Act negotiations without him in the room
