Replit CEO Says It No Longer Works with Anthropic; Insider Disputes

Replit’s CEO and co-founder Amjad Masad said on stage at TechCrunch Disrupt that Replit is no longer working with Anthropic. TechCrunch reported the remarks on 16 October 2026. An unnamed person familiar with the partnership told TechCrunch the partnership is still in place. Replit has not publicly clarified. Treat the status as disputed.

What Masad said

Masad told the Disrupt audience that Replit’s choice of partner rested on cost, partnership terms and performance, and that OpenAI looked better on those measures for now. Replit announced an OpenAI partnership in August; TechCrunch notes there had been no prior public signal that the Anthropic relationship was ending.

Key quotes from TechCrunch’s account:

  • “I think ChatGPT is better now.”
  • “We publish a public benchmark as well, and consistently, Sol and Astra perform better on building vibe-coded applications from scratch.”
  • “It was a decision based on both cost, partnership, and performance. And for all these reasons, we just felt like they were a better partner for now.”

Under the Anthropic partnership, TechCrunch writes, Replit used Claude models to run its cloud development platform — a relationship that had been described as helping Replit grow revenue significantly.

Why TechCrunch calls it disputed

Masad’s comments were rejected by people familiar with the Anthropic–Replit relationship, TechCrunch says. One person familiar, who asked not to be named, said the partnership was still in place.

TechCrunch also points to recent public traces of Claude on Replit’s stack:

  • A late-September Replit blog post listed Anthropic’s Claude Fable 5 and Claude Fable 5.1 as models running in Replit Agent’s production environment.
  • Around the same time, TechCrunch says, a Replit product employee posted on X about using Anthropic’s Opus 5.5. TSN has not independently verified that X post via the X API, so that detail is TechCrunch’s reporting, not a TSN credit.

TechCrunch says it asked Replit for clarification and will update if it hears back. As of the article TSN read, Replit had not clarified whether Masad meant a full commercial exit, a de-emphasis of Claude in the product, or something narrower.

Enterprise and B2B revenue share

On the same stage, Masad gave percentage splits for Replit’s revenue mix. He said Replit is not sharing ARR numbers yet. The figures below are his claims, as reported by TechCrunch:

  • Enterprise was “like 2% of revenue last year.”
  • “This year, I would say like 15% of our revenue is enterprise contracts.”
  • “More than 50% of our revenue is B2B.”

Those percentages matter for how to read any model-provider switch: if enterprise is growing fast as a share of revenue, procurement, pricing and reliability with a frontier lab become board-level issues, not just IDE taste.

Background: why the pairing mattered

Replit sells a browser-based environment where users build and deploy apps without a local toolchain. Pairing that product with a frontier coding model is how several “vibe coding” platforms compete. Anthropic’s Claude family has been a default choice for many coding-agent products; OpenAI’s ChatGPT / Codex-class models are the other pole. A public claim that Replit has left Anthropic — if accurate — would be a visible swing in that market. A quiet continuation of Claude in production — if the insider is right — would mean the stage line overstated the break.

TSN has covered adjacent AI-coding infrastructure, including Anthropic’s in-house version-control system Scion, built because AI coding volume outgrew Git, and agent sandboxing work from Microsoft and AWS that sits in the same “safe place to run agents” stack Masad also discussed on stage.

What’s still unknown

  • Whether any Anthropic commercial contract has actually ended, and on what date
  • Whether Claude models remain available inside Replit Agent today
  • Replit’s official clarification (none in the TechCrunch piece TSN read)
  • ARR and absolute dollar figures (explicitly not shared)

What this means

  • Masad said on stage that Replit no longer works with Anthropic and prefers OpenAI for cost, partnership and performance.
  • An unnamed insider told TechCrunch the partnership is still in place; late-September Replit materials still listed Claude in Agent production.
  • Status is disputed until Replit clarifies.
  • Masad’s revenue claims: enterprise ~2% last year → ~15% this year; B2B more than 50%; ARR not disclosed.
