Mercedes-AMG Unveils Its First Full-Size Electric GT SUV

Mercedes-AMG has unveiled the Mercedes-AMG GT SUV, an all-electric full-size performance SUV on the AMG.EA high-performance architecture. The Mercedes-Benz USA press information is dated 17 October 2026 (Affalterbach). A same-day German Mercedes-Benz Media article adds European order timing and a German starting price for the entry model.

The US release states: “For the first time in its 59-year history, Mercedes-AMG developed a full-size SUV from the ground up entirely in-house.” It is the second model on AMG.EA after the AMG GT 4-Door Coupé. Mercedes-Benz Group CTO Jörg Burzer is quoted saying the company is “setting a new benchmark in the electric SUV segment.”

All power, charging and range numbers below are manufacturer figures. The release’s own footnote says charging-related figures “are preliminary. No confirmed values from an officially recognized testing organization… are available at this time.” Acceleration times are marked “(est.)”.

Three models, two drivetrain layouts

At launch the portfolio is:

  • AMG GT 63 SUV — three axial flux motors; peak output 1,153 hp; continuous output 711 hp; torque 1,475 lb-ft (US table).
  • AMG GT 55 SUV — three axial flux motors; “up to 805 hp”; continuous 711 hp.
  • AMG GT 53 SUV — two permanently excited synchronous motors (one per axle); “a combined 536 hp”.

The US release also highlights “up to 711 hp of continuous output” for the top axial-flux cars. Top speed for the GT 63 is 168 mph, electronically limited. The headline sprint figure is 0–60 mph in 2.4 seconds with a 1-foot rollout, marked as an estimate; without rollout the table lists 2.6 s (est.).

Batteries and charging (preliminary)

Both packs use 800-volt architecture with directly cooled cylindrical cells. Usable capacity is 128 kWh on the GT 63 and GT 55, and 106 kWh on the GT 53.

Headline charging claims (US release):

  • GT 63 / GT 55: DC “up to 710 kW”; “up to 450 km” of WLTP range “can be charged in as little as 10 minutes”.
  • GT 53: “up to 600 kW DC”; “up to 380 km” in as little as ten minutes.
  • 10–80% state of charge: 12 minutes on the 128 kWh cars (table: 11 minutes for the GT 53).

The US technical table lists 454 km added in 10 minutes for the 128 kWh models and 440 km for the GT 53 — slightly different from the “up to 450 km / 380 km” headline wording. Treat both as preliminary manufacturer claims pending type approval.

The SUV is designed to support five DC fast-charging standards: NACS, CCS2, GB/T, CHAdeMO and CCS1.

AI in the cabin: MBUX on MB.OS

The US release’s digital section says: “The new generation MBUX also integrates artificial intelligence from ChatGPT, Microsoft and Google.” It runs on the Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS). The German article is more specific about three agents — ChatGPT, Microsoft Bing and Google Gemini — inside MBUX, with a Virtual Assistant that can run multi-turn conversations. That is in-car software integration, not a claim that ChatGPT drives the car.

Exclusive AMG apps listed include PERFORMANCE MENU, SET UP and TRACK PACE, plus a Predictive Performance Manager for energy use on track.

When you can buy it

  • United States: “The all-new 2028 Mercedes-AMG GT SUV arrives at U.S. dealerships in summer 2027.”
  • Germany (German release): the GT 53 SUV is orderable from 20 October, from €113,050 (German recommended price including VAT). The GT 63 and GT 55 “follow in spring 2027.”

Production is at Sindelfingen, Hall 32, which Mercedes says was retrofitted for AMG.EA.

Why it matters

AMG’s first in-house full-size SUV puts Affalterbach’s axial-flux / 800 V stack into a volume-relevant body style, with an explicit AI-assistant stack in MBUX. Related TSN coverage includes Mercedes-Benz’s expanded NVIDIA automated-driving partnership, Volkswagen’s ID. Tiguan electric SUV, China’s carmaker safety / draft-rules meeting, and VW’s ID. battery-cell recall preparation.

Until type-approved consumption, range and charging numbers appear, the 710 kW / 450 km-in-10-minutes lines remain preliminary marketing figures, not certified results.

What’s still unknown

  • Official EC / EPA type-approval values for range, consumption and charging
  • US pricing
  • How often real-world DC sessions approach the 710 kW peak
  • Whether MBUX’s ChatGPT / Microsoft / Google agents ship in every market at launch

What this means

Mercedes-AMG’s first full-size in-house SUV is electric, second on AMG.EA, with a GT 63 peak of 1,153 hp, 800 V packs of 128 or 106 kWh, and headline DC charging “up to 710 kW” / “up to 450 km” in about ten minutes — all with the release’s preliminary and estimate caveats attached. US showrooms are aimed for summer 2027 (2028 model year); in Germany the GT 53 can be ordered from 20 October from €113,050.
