Stablecoins are no longer a side bet for cross-border and B2B rails. The operational problem Mastercard is selling against is opacity: once a transfer becomes a multi-hop on-chain path, classic card-style fraud tools lose the plot.
In brief
- Mastercard (19 October 2026, Money20/20 USA in Las Vegas) launched Stablecoin Security, a risk-intelligence API with initial partners Borderless.xyz and Keyrails.
- For banks and payment firms touching stablecoins, it is meant to flag fraud, scams, sanctions and other financial-crime signals across the payment lifecycle, including before funds move on-chain, and to drop a risk score into existing compliance workflows.
- Rollout: Mastercard says the product launches first in North America, with worldwide commercial availability expected in 2027.
Why banks say they need it
Mastercard cites a study of 593 million stablecoin transfer events across 141 million Ethereum transactions in 2025 that found nearly 60% were complex, multi-step flows rather than simple one-to-one payments. The Block reported that the study is from the Bank for International Settlements; Mastercard’s own release does not name the author.
Ann Johnson, Mastercard’s EVP for Security Solutions, said institutions “need the right intelligence and controls to participate with confidence” as stablecoins create new ways to move value.
How the API is supposed to work
Delivered as a platform-agnostic API, Stablecoin Security analyses transaction context, fund provenance, exposure to restricted parties and scam indicators, then returns intelligence — including a pre-completion risk score — that can plug into fraud, compliance and case-management systems. The point is to avoid a parallel risk stack for digital assets.

Borderless.xyz is pitched as a single connection to licensed stablecoin providers in more than 113 countries and 72 currencies. Keyrails focuses on high-value cross-border trade, especially in emerging markets. Both sit in Mastercard’s Start Path Blockchain and Digital Assets programme. Mastercard also says it will expand the product in 2027, including through BVNK, the stablecoin infrastructure firm it acquired in August 2026 — a thread The Block highlighted in its rollout coverage.
Our read
For AML and sanctions teams, pre-chain scoring is the useful idea: stop the payment in the bank’s workflow before a mixer hop erases the trail. The compliance catch is familiar — model risk, false positives on complex but legitimate trade, and who owns the decision when an API score conflicts with a relationship manager. Watch North American pilots and whether BVNK rails make the 2027 global date feel real.
