Metis TechBio, a Hong Kong-listed company that uses AI to design drug-delivery particles, has signed a research deal with Eli Lilly that could be worth up to about US$1.1 billion in milestone payments, it told the Hong Kong stock exchange on 19 October 2026. The cash guaranteed up front is far smaller: a payment “in the low double-digit millions of U.S. dollars”.
The deal is about a stubborn problem in medicine: getting a drug to the part of the body that needs it. Metis will use its AI platform to design new lipid nanoparticles (LNPs), tiny fat-based carriers, that can deliver treatments to specific tissues. If it works, better targeting could help treatments reach the tissues they are meant for, though the partnership is only at the research and discovery stage.
In brief
- Metis TechBio and Eli Lilly have agreed a strategic collaboration to discover LNP delivery systems for tissue-specific treatments, using Metis’s AI platform, AiLNP.
- It is a sign of big pharma paying for AI-designed delivery, not just AI-designed drugs.
- Most of the headline value depends on future milestones; no product, timeline or exact upfront figure has been disclosed.
The money comes with conditions
According to the announcement, Metis “will be eligible to receive an upfront payment in the low double-digit millions of U.S. dollars, and up to approximately US$1.1 billion in development, regulatory, and commercial milestone payments”. It is also eligible for “single-digit tiered royalties based on annual net sales of products resulting from the collaboration”.
That structure matters for how the headline should be read. The $1.1 billion is a ceiling, paid only if products clear development, regulatory and sales hurdles. Reuters reported the agreement as “worth up to $1.1 billion”.
| Term | What Metis disclosed |
|---|---|
| Upfront | Low double-digit millions (US$) |
| Milestones | Up to about US$1.1bn |
| Royalties | Single-digit, tiered |
| Stage | Research and discovery |
What each side brings
Metis says it will use its “proprietary, AI-driven ionizable lipid discovery and optimization platform, AiLNP” to develop delivery technologies that could “improve targeting and biodistribution”. Lilly “will contribute its expertise in drug discovery, development, and commercialization”.
The aim, the filing says, is to find LNP designs that “may enable improved tissue specificity, enhanced therapeutic performance, and broader applicability across multiple disease areas”. It does not name diseases, drug types or how many programmes are covered. No statement from Lilly was found in the sources checked.
“Delivery remains a critical determinant of therapeutic success, particularly as the industry expands into increasingly sophisticated modalities,” Metis chairman and chief executive Chris Lai said in a company release.
A young company with big claims
Metis was co-founded in 2020 and listed in Hong Kong on 13 May 2026 under stock code 7666. It describes itself as the “world’s first listed company of AI drug delivery” and says it owns “the world’s largest proprietary LNP lipid library with over 10 million lipids”. Those are the company’s own claims, as is its statement that it can already deliver precisely to eight key organs or tissues.
The deal fits a wider pattern. Lilly has worked with AI drug designers before, as in its partnership with Insilico, and AstraZeneca recently signed with insitro.
Our read
The notable thing is what Lilly is buying: not a drug candidate, but a way of designing the carrier. That suggests delivery is becoming a target for AI in its own right. But with only a low double-digit-million upfront payment confirmed, the deal is mainly an option for Lilly; the $1.1 billion only matters if the designs reach the clinic.
What happens next will be measured in milestones. The first public test is whether either company names a disease area or a first candidate built on AiLNP.
