Amazon says it plans to invest more than €16 billion ($18 billion) in Germany in 2027, across data centres, satellite internet, logistics and TV production. The company announced the plan on 20 October 2026 at the Invest in Germany Summit, held by the federal government in Berlin, with Chancellor Friedrich Merz in attendance.
These are planned investments for next year, not money already spent. The largest named slice is €4.8 billion for Amazon’s cloud business, AWS, to expand its Frankfurt region. Amazon says the investments span jobs, technology and infrastructure, and build on more than €100 billion it has put into Germany since 2010.
In brief
- Amazon says it plans to invest more than €16 billion ($18 billion) in Germany in 2027, spanning AWS data centres, Amazon Leo, logistics and Prime Video.
- €4.8 billion is planned to expand the AWS Europe (Frankfurt) Region; Amazon gives no separate figures for Leo, logistics or Prime Video.
- Amazon says it has invested more than €100 billion in Germany since 2010 and created more than 40,000 permanent jobs there.
What the €16bn is meant to cover
According to Amazon, the new investments include “the expansion of data centers and AI infrastructure, high-speed satellite internet through Amazon Leo, new logistics projects across the country, and a major new production slate by Prime Video.” Beyond the AWS figure, the release does not say how the total will be split.
“Germany is a hub of innovation and one of the most attractive investment opportunities in Europe. That is why we have invested more than €100 billion here since 2010, and why we plan to invest an additional €16 billion in 2027,” said David Zapolsky, Amazon’s chief global affairs and legal officer.
Katherina Reiche, the federal minister for economic affairs and energy, welcomed the plan. “Amazon’s investment is a clear vote of confidence in Germany as a location for the future,” she said. “High-performance data centers are the foundation of the digital economy.”
Cloud and AI: €4.8bn for Frankfurt
The biggest named element is for AWS. “As part of the investments, €4.8 billion is planned to expand the AWS Europe (Frankfurt) Region through 2027,” said Stefan Höchbauer, AWS vice president of global sales for Germany and Europe Central.
Amazon says it has invested “double-digit billions of euros” in German cloud infrastructure since launching the Frankfurt region in October 2014. It also runs the AWS European Sovereign Cloud in Germany, which it says has been “generally available since January 2026”. Of Amazon’s more than 40,000 permanent jobs in Germany, 3,000 are at AWS, according to the company.
Satellites, warehouses and TV
For Amazon Leo, its low-Earth-orbit satellite internet network, Amazon says it “has secured 24 launches” with the European launch provider Arianespace. It cites Oxford Economics projections that Leo’s second-largest economic impact in Europe will be felt in Germany, home to several ArianeGroup sites.
On logistics, Amazon says modernisation of fulfilment centres in Bad Hersfeld, Dortmund and Werne will be completed in 2027, with work in Koblenz, Pforzheim and Rheinberg continuing through 2028. It is opening a fulfilment centre in Zweibrücken this year and building another in Könnern. Amazon says these already-announced projects “account for more than 3,000 new jobs”. It is also opening a second robotics and AI research lab in Berlin.
For Prime Video, Amazon says it has produced more than 65 local titles in Germany, with more than 15 productions coming through the end of 2027. On energy, it says carbon-free projects it has enabled in Germany total “more than 1.3 GW”, including offshore wind farms in the North and Baltic Seas.
| Figure | Amount |
|---|---|
| Planned investment in Germany, 2027 | More than €16bn ($18bn) |
| Planned for AWS Frankfurt expansion | €4.8bn |
| Invested in Germany since 2010 | More than €100bn |
| Permanent jobs in Germany | More than 40,000 |
Our read
The €16 billion headline bundles very different spending, from server halls to TV drama, and only the AWS share is broken out. That makes it a strong political signal, delivered alongside the chancellor, more than a detailed investment schedule. The figure to watch is the €4.8 billion for Frankfurt: as European demand for sovereign cloud and AI capacity grows, it shows where Amazon expects that demand to land.
