Luxor Raises $16m Led by CMT Digital to Grow Its AI Compute Trading

Luxor Technology, a company that built its business selling tools to bitcoin miners, has raised $16m to push further into AI. In a release on 27 October, Luxor said the strategic round was led by CMT Digital, with Canaan, MicroBT, Halo, Steelhead and angel investors joining. The company also announced the round on X.

The round includes both new money for the company and the sale of existing shares, Luxor said. It gave no valuation.

Who invested

CMT Digital is the venture arm of CMT Group, a Chicago trading firm. Canaan and MicroBT both make bitcoin mining machines. Luxor says “each investor is an operating partner” in the supply chain it serves: “hardware, capital, and power”.

Canaan chief executive Nangeng Zhang said the company is seeking “long-term power resources in North America” and that Luxor “has become an important partner of Canaan across Bitcoin mining and the energy industry”.

What Luxor does

Luxor runs a mining pool, sells mining software and brokers hardware. In September it launched Luxor AI, which takes the same mix of hardware, energy, software and trading into AI computing.

The company gives some figures for its existing business. It says its hardware desk “has traded $1 billion of ASIC hardware for Bitcoin mining”, its energy arm handles more than 75 MW of electricity load across two US grid regions, ERCOT and SPP, and its cloud platform for AI agents had run 1.8 million workloads this year up to September. These are Luxor’s own numbers.

Luxor says it will use the money to:

  • grow its cloud platform for AI agents;
  • provide working capital for its AI hardware business;
  • expand trading and market making in compute derivatives;
  • hire engineers and sales staff.

Trading AI computing power

The most unusual part of the plan is the trading desk. Luxor already sells financial contracts tied to the price of renting AI chips, offering “cash-settled options, forwards, and backstops on compute-rental indexes”. In plain terms, a company that rents out GPUs, or one that needs them, can lock in a price ahead of time, much as an airline can fix the cost of fuel.

“As AI compute becomes a tradable market, operators and buyers need ways to price and manage risk on it,” the release says. Luxor already runs a similar business for bitcoin “hashrate”, the computing power miners sell.

Why miners are building AI businesses

Luxor’s pitch follows a familiar pattern. Bitcoin miners already own the two things AI data centres need most: power connections and sites. That is why SWI Group plans to turn the miner Genesis Digital into AI data centres, and why Soluna agreed a Texas AI venture with Applied Digital. “Compute markets are converging: the same miners, power sites and capital that served digital mining are now powering AI,” said Luxor chief executive Nick Hansen.

Luxor is taking a lighter route. Instead of building data centres, it wants to sit in the middle as broker, reseller and price-setter. As a reseller for major server makers, it says it can reach “abandoned orders, special allocation, and used markets” at a time when supply chains for GPUs “are becoming increasingly hard to navigate”.

That model needs less money than building sites, which helps explain why $16m is small next to rounds such as General Compute’s $100m. The risk is that compute derivatives are still a young market. Their value depends on enough buyers and sellers agreeing on a fair index price, and Luxor has not said how much trading its desk handles today. Having two mining-machine makers on the cap table also ties Luxor closely to the suppliers whose hardware it trades.

What to watch

Luxor has not given a hiring target or a timeline for the new products. The size of its compute derivatives book and any named AI customers would show whether the AI move is working.
