Tencent Hy4 Launches With Vision and Computer Use, Weights to Follow

Tencent has released Hy4, the latest model in its Hy (Hunyuan) family, adding image understanding and the ability to operate software on a computer. It is available now through Tencent Cloud and OpenRouter, but the model weights are not yet public: Tencent says it plans to release them later.

The company set out the launch on its Hy4 research page on 4 November and in a post from @TencentHunyuan on X, which said: “Hy4 is here, new with vision.”

In brief

  • Tencent Hy4 adds vision and computer use, and is live on Tencent Cloud, OpenRouter and Tencent apps.
  • Tencent plans to open-source the weights, with a system card, but has not done so yet.
  • Tencent admits “a notable gap remains” between Hy4 and top proprietary models.

What Tencent Hy4 adds

Vision arrives in the Hy line “for the first time”, according to Tencent. “Hy4 also supports computer use for the first time, working across command-line interfaces (CLI) and graphical user interfaces (GUI),” the company writes, with examples including Blender and CAD software.

Tencent compares Hy4 with the Hy4 preview it showed earlier, reporting gains of 19.1% on a GameDev evaluation and 9.8% on GameLogic. In a finance evaluation that involved 213 professionals across 579 tasks, Tencent says “Hy4 ranks first among open-weight models”, with a score of 3.04 against 2.97 for DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash-1017. It also reports that, in internal tests, the hallucination rate fell from 15.76% to 5.45% and speculative errors from 23.1% to 5.6%.

Outside Tencent, the Arena leaderboard said on X that Hy4 placed 14th overall on its Agent Arena.

Tencent calls Hy4 one of “the strongest open-source models”, but that description rests on a promise. “We plan to open-source Hy4’s model weights and have partnered with the vLLM (Inferact Inc.) and SGLang communities,” the page says, adding: “When we release the weights, we will also publish a comprehensive system card.” No release date is given, and until then Hy4 can only be used through Tencent’s own services and the hosted API on OpenRouter. A smaller Hy4 flash is planned “in the near future”.

Price, apps and safety

“Hy4 is now available on Tencent Cloud and OpenRouter, as well as in products including CodeBuddy, WorkBuddy, Yuanbao, and ima,” Tencent says, at the same API price as the preview. Its listed prices are $0.042 per million cached input tokens, $0.834 per million input tokens and $2.501 per million output tokens. OpenRouter’s model page was showing a discounted $0.417 input and $1.251 output per million tokens.

On safety, Tencent says cyber training data was limited to defensive material and that Tencent Xuanwu Lab and Keen Security Lab ran red-team audits. It reports a score of 30.4 out of 100 on its own Hy-BioExperimentBench. Tencent is also open-sourcing HyCell and HyPDE, two research models it says were co-developed by Hy4 and Hyra 2.0.

What Tencent Hy4 means for the open model race

Hy4 is Tencent’s clearest attempt yet to sit alongside DeepSeek and other Chinese labs at the top of the open model tables, and it is shipping into products people already use. TSN reported on 2 November that WorkBuddy had passed 9bn tasks as Tencent previewed Hy4, and computer use is the feature most likely to matter in that kind of agent tool.

The open-weight framing should be read with care for now. Until the weights and system card are published, outside researchers cannot run, inspect or fine-tune Hy4 themselves, and the benchmark results are Tencent’s own, apart from Arena’s ranking. Tencent’s candour about limits helps: it says “a notable gap remains between it and top proprietary models, particularly on challenging internal benchmarks for research-level mathematics, long-horizon coding, model self-improvement, and advanced visual question answering.”

Tencent has released open models before, including the HyInv and HyPLM protein models, and is pushing agents into payments through its MoU with Visa. The weight release, and what the system card says about cyber and bio risk, will show whether Hy4 lives up to the label Tencent has given it.
