Zipline Raises $1.5bn as Walmart Adds 300 Drone Sites

Zipline on 5 November 2026 announced a $1.5 billion funding round at a $21.5 billion post-money valuation, led by Paradigm, WCM Investment Management and Layer Global, according to its newsroom post. The same day, Walmart said it has a new multi-year national agreement with Zipline to add 300 drone delivery sites, with potential to grow further.

Zipline lists additional participants including Valor Equity Partners, Fidelity Management & Research Company, Uber, Tiger Global, J.P. Morgan, ARK Invest and Salesforce Ventures. It says the capital will expand US manufacturing and hiring for a nationwide drone delivery network. Zipline also points to quieter “sound-optimised dynamic flying” and a next-generation aircraft for heavier, longer-range orders as part of the same scale-up story.

What Zipline and Walmart say the expansion includes

Walmart, which calls itself the operator of the nation’s largest retail drone delivery programme, says it has completed more than 2 million drone deliveries to date and has worked with Zipline since 2021. Deliveries can arrive in as fast as 30 minutes where available, Walmart says, with tens of thousands of eligible items and with 90% of Americans living within 10 miles of a Walmart store. Customers see the option in the Walmart app or on Walmart.com when their address is in range; eligible addresses can also order through the Zipline app.

Zipline says it has flown 150 million commercial autonomous miles without a safety incident — a company claim. Walmart’s page repeats the 150 million miles figure and describes Zipline’s home-delivery design as keeping the aircraft roughly 330 feet up while a pod descends on a tether. Zipline separately says Uber is targeting one million Zipline deliveries a day by 2029; that daily target is Zipline’s statement of Uber’s aim, not a figure Uber publishes in the Walmart note.

How this sits with other retail drone stories

TSN has covered Wing’s Walmart Charlotte drone delivery work, Saildrone Surveyor autonomous operations, and other unmanned systems such as the Sky-Watch RQ-35 NSPA framework. The Wing–Walmart piece is the closest retail parallel: another store-network drone trial. The Zipline–Walmart announcements pair a large private raise with a quantified site expansion (300 additional locations) under a multi-year national agreement.

That combination — fresh capital plus a named big-box site count — is what separates this from a funding-only note.

What $1.5bn and 300 Walmart sites change for drone delivery

On the companies’ terms, Zipline gets balance-sheet room to build US factories and hire while Walmart commits to a thicker Zipline footprint across its store grid. For shoppers in newly enabled catchments, the practical change is another same-day path measured in minutes for a short basket, sitting beside Walmart’s other delivery tiers. For restaurants and local merchants Zipline cites in its own metros, the raise is meant to fund network density rather than a single-city demo.

Zipline’s own operating claims — median Dallas–Fort Worth orders in 19 minutes, restaurant partners seeing Zipline take a rising share of delivery revenue — sit outside Walmart’s corporate note but help explain why a retailer already past two million drone drops would lock in 300 more sites. Walmart’s advantage pitch is proximity: if most Americans live near a store, more Zipline pads turn that density into minute-scale fulfilment without building dark stores from scratch.

The rollout calendar for the 300 sites, how Zipline and Wing territories will overlap at Walmart, and whether Uber’s million-deliveries-a-day target by 2029 appears in Uber’s own disclosures remain open. The safety-mile and delivery-volume figures stay attributed company statistics unless regulators or insurers publish matching audits.
