MetaMask is the most popular wallet for interacting with Ethereum and Web3. It’s a browser extension that holds your private keys and lets you trade, stake, and use decentralised apps without ever giving your keys to anyone.
This guide walks you through setting up MetaMask from scratch.
What Is MetaMask?
MetaMask is a self-custody wallet that lives in your browser. It stores your private keys locally on your computer, not on MetaMask’s servers. When you want to trade or interact with a smart contract, MetaMask signs the transaction with your private key — you stay in control.
Think of it as a bridge between your browser and the blockchain.
Installation
Step 1: Download
Go to metamask.io (verify the URL) and click “Download.”
Choose your browser: Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Brave.
Step 2: Install the Extension
Your browser’s extension store opens. Click “Add to [Browser]” or “Install.”
A new tab opens. Welcome to MetaMask setup.
Creating Your Wallet
Step 1: Create or Import
MetaMask asks: “Create wallet” or “Import using seed phrase”?
If you’re new: click “Create Wallet.”
If you already have a seed phrase from another wallet: click “Import Wallet” and paste your seed phrase.
Step 2: Set a Password
Create a strong password. This locks MetaMask on your computer — it does NOT recover your wallet if you forget it.
Write it down or use a password manager.
Step 3: Back Up Your Seed Phrase
MetaMask displays your 12-word seed phrase. This is the MOST IMPORTANT piece of information.
⚠️ CRITICAL: Write these 12 words on paper right now. Do NOT screenshot. Do NOT save to your computer. Physical paper only.
Store it somewhere safe — a safe, a vault, somewhere secure.
If someone gets your seed phrase, they own your wallet and all your crypto. Forever.
Step 4: Verify Your Seed Phrase
MetaMask will ask you to re-enter your seed phrase to confirm you wrote it down correctly. Do this carefully.
Done. You now have a MetaMask wallet.
Receiving Crypto
Step 1: Click Your Address
In MetaMask, you’ll see a long string starting with “0x…”. This is your wallet address. Click it to copy.
Step 2: Send It to Anyone
You can safely share your address. Anyone can send you crypto to this address.
Never share your seed phrase or private key — only your address.
Sending Crypto
Step 1: Click “Send”
In MetaMask, click “Send.”
Step 2: Enter Recipient Address
Paste the recipient’s wallet address (0x…).
Double-check the address. Transactions are irreversible.
Step 3: Enter Amount and Confirm
Enter how much to send. MetaMask shows the gas fee. Click “Next” → “Confirm.”
The transaction broadcasts. Wait for confirmation (usually 30 seconds to a few minutes).
Using MetaMask with DeFi Apps
When you visit a DEX or other Web3 app, you’ll see “Connect Wallet.” Click it → select MetaMask → approve in MetaMask.
MetaMask now signs your transactions. You stay in control. You never give your private key to the app.
