Torch Systems Raises $11.5M for TerraNode, Solar-Powered Sensors That Watch Remote Infrastructure

Torch Systems, a California company that makes solar-powered sensors for outdoor infrastructure, announced $11.5 million in total funding on 6 October 2026. Of that, $9.5 million is equity and $2 million is venture debt. The company started with wildfire detection and now sells to utilities, cities and industrial operators.

What was announced

Confirmed (company release). Torch Systems, based in Lafayette, California, said the financing includes $9.5 million in equity from Khosla Ventures, Abstract, Construct Capital and Starship Ventures, plus $2 million in venture debt from First Citizens Innovation Banking, formerly Silicon Valley Bank [1]. The release does not name a lead investor, a valuation or a round name. Construct Capital says on its own site that it “co-led” the round with the other three equity investors [3]. That is Construct’s statement, not the company’s.

Equity versus venture debt

Equity means investors pay for a share of the company and are not repaid if it fails. Venture debt is a loan to a start-up, usually from a bank, that must be paid back, normally with interest. So about $2 million of the $11.5 million headline is borrowed money, not new ownership. Axios Pro, which reported the raise on 6 October, says the equity was raised through SAFE notes, a common start-up instrument where investors’ shares are fixed later [2].

What TerraNode is

Confirmed (company release). TerraNode is “a self-contained, solar-powered multi-sensor device”. Each one combines optical and thermal cameras with acoustic, gas, air-quality and environmental sensing, plus AI that runs on the device itself [1]. Torch says it needs no external power or wired network connection and can be installed in minutes, aimed at places such as remote solar farms and transmission corridors. A software platform turns the data into alerts.

The company says it began with fire detection, and customers now use it for fire risk, equipment overheating, security and access, and vegetation growth [1]. CEO Vasya Tremsin told Axios Pro it was once a “smoke detector for the outdoors” [2].

What is claimed about use

Company claims. The release says “hundreds” of TerraNodes are deployed in California, Oregon, New Mexico, Virginia, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island, and that they have “detected numerous real-world fires at their earliest stages” in California, New Mexico and Oregon [1]. TSN has not independently checked that. Dominion Energy is the one customer named; the release says it uses Torch at solar sites to watch for fire, panel misalignment, overheating and vegetation growth. No contract size was given [1].

Reported (Axios Pro, CEO’s figures). Tremsin says 300 units are deployed, with another 800 backordered, and that Torch charges utilities and municipalities an annual fee. He says he expects profitability “within 2027” [2]. Those are his figures and an expectation, not audited results.

Vinod Khosla, founder of Khosla Ventures, said in the release that Torch’s sensors “read signals that cameras and satellites can’t detect” [1]. That is an investor’s claim.

What the money is for

Torch says it will spend the funds on manufacturing and deployment of TerraNode devices, sales and field teams, and its software platform, aiming to go from hundreds of devices to thousands [1].

The Bottom Line

The funding and the split are confirmed by the company: $11.5 million, of which $2 million is debt. The device description is the company’s own. The unit counts and the profit target come from the CEO via Axios Pro, and the fire-detection results are the company’s claim. This is not investment advice.
