Elon Musk posted on X on Sunday 11 October 2026: “Grok @Bot can research best prices and buy things for you” [1]. It is an endorsement, not a launch. The purchasing feature was announced on 28 August [4].

Confirmed: Musk’s post and the 28 August announcement. How well it works is users’ reports; TSN has not tested purchasing.
What was said
Teslaconomics wrote at 08:20 BST: “I just text my @bot what I want, and it handles everything. Literally finds it, checks out, places the order, and sends me the receipt.” He added: “I don’t even open a single website.” [2] That is one user’s experience, not a product guarantee. Musk quoted it at 13:08 BST.
What the announcement says
On 28 August the official @bot account on X said: “Grok Bot can now buy things on the internet.” You connect Link, a payment wallet, and send your Bot shopping [4]. A second post: “You approve every spend request, and Grok Bot receives a secure, single-use card for each payment. Currently available to users in the US, rolling out to mobile soon.” [5] LinkedIn carries the same words, dated 28 August [6]. TSN has not checked whether availability has changed.
Hands-off, but approved?
Both can be true. The Bot does the browsing and checkout steps; the spend request is the step that needs you. Link’s FAQ says the agent “sends Link a spend request with a maximum spend amount”, approved “with biometric authentication” [7]. That FAQ covers any agent and does not name Grok Bot.
Teslaconomics does not mention approving, and TSN cannot see his settings. An earlier post of his says he gave the Bot “my credit card info” [3]. Grok’s docs treat approval as a setup you control: they list “Purchases and financial transfers” among actions to set explicit boundaries for and advise “Keep sending, publishing, purchasing, deletion, and production changes behind approval” [8]. They do not say purchases are blocked by default.
Single-use card, and what approving means
A single-use card is a card number made for one payment; it cannot be used again. Link says “Your payment details (card, bank account, payment token) are never shared with the agent or merchants.” [7]
Link is plain about the limit: “This is only an approval of the proposed spend amount. You are responsible for all purchases your agent makes, even if they accidentally purchase a different product than was initially surfaced to you.” [7] Grok’s docs add: “An approval controls the proposed action. It does not reverse work already completed.” [8]
TSN analysis. Before approving, check the exact item and quantity, the total including delivery cost, the merchant and the delivery address. Ask the Bot to show the cart first, and try a cheap item first.
What is not known
Fees and prices are not sourced. Where the approval appears in Grok Bot is not shown. A guide by Matt Palmer, who says he works on DevRel at SpaceXSI, describes comparing prices and delivery at Costco and Amazon, and warns that if you log in there, “it can technically buy whatever it wants, the same way a human could” [9].
Disclosure: TSN uses Grok Bot itself.
