Tata Power Says It Has a 2.8 GW+ Data-Centre Opportunity Pipeline Across 18 Operators, and Is Upgrading Mumbai’s Grid

Tata Power, one of India’s biggest power companies, says it has built up a pipeline of data-centre opportunities worth more than 2.8 gigawatts (GW) of power. The opportunities span 18 data-centre operators in India and abroad.

The company announced the pipeline in a press release dated 14 October 2026, which it also filed with the stock exchange. The pipeline is made up of opportunities and active discussions, not signed contracts. Tata Power has not named the operators or disclosed timelines or contract values.

What is in the pipeline

According to the release text published by T&D India, the pipeline includes:

  • about 430 megawatts (MW) of upcoming demand from data centres on its own distribution network;
  • 1,236 MW of opportunities linked to its transmission network; and
  • 1,150 MW of green energy capacity “under active engagement”.

Tata Power said it has “29 active workstreams across 18 leading global and domestic Data Centre Operators”. Beyond supplying electricity, it offers data-centre builders powered land, grid connections, renewable energy, storage, cooling and other utility infrastructure.

Mumbai’s grid upgrade

To meet demand from large data centres in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, Tata Power said it is upgrading its 110kV and 220kV network, building new receiving stations and advancing a 400 kV transmission ring network.

The company said the work is part of its “Rs.15,000 crore Mumbai Grid Upgradation and Expansion Plan”.

Why demand is growing

Tata Power cited a projection from India’s Ministry of Power, based on Central Electricity Authority (CEA) estimates, that AI-led data centres “could add approximately 26.3 GW of electricity demand by FY2031-32”.

ETEnergyworld reported that Tata Power has more than 26 GW of generating capacity in operation or under construction, including about 17.7 GW of clean and green energy.

What this means

  • These are opportunities, not deals. Tata Power has not said how much of the 2.8 GW will turn into contracts, or when.
  • Power is the bottleneck for AI data centres. Utilities like Tata Power are positioning themselves as partners for data-centre builders.
  • Mumbai is a key hub. The grid upgrade is aimed at the region’s large data-centre projects.
