Bluesky Expands Attie for “Social Vibe Coding” and Plans Payments Without Ads

Bluesky is expanding Attie, its experimental AI-powered app, so creators can build websites, quizzes, games, polls and other interactive experiences for groups of people, and it plans to introduce payments on the network in the coming months as a first step toward making money without advertising, TechCrunch reported from TechCrunch Disrupt on 15 October 2026.

There was no Bluesky blog post for these announcements in the sources used here. The details below are attributed to TechCrunch’s on-stage coverage and to the executives the outlet quoted.

Attie: social vibe coding

Sarah Perez reported that Attie originally offered AI tools for building custom social feeds, and that the new creation capabilities are meant to let everyday users make experiences that previously needed software developers.

CEO Toni Schneider, speaking at Disrupt, said: “We’re adding a feature to our Attie product that allows you to build sites and social experiences again for a group of people. So think of it as … social vibe coding or vibe coding for your community.”

Schneider told TechCrunch that vibe coding today is “kind of a single-user, solo experience,” and that he wants people to “build together or build for a group of people,” which is what Attie is meant to do. Creations live on the AT Protocol (ATProto) that powers Bluesky and other Atmosphere apps, TechCrunch said, and are tied to the user’s ATProto identity. Attie will also suggest projects based on public Bluesky profiles, according to the outlet.

COO Rose Wang said users can bring their own AI model or use open-weight options, and that resulting sites and games can tap Bluesky’s wider audience. “What makes Attie so interesting is that it comes with the Bluesky distribution, so it doesn’t stand alone,” she said, per TechCrunch.

Scale and private data — as TechCrunch framed them

TechCrunch wrote that Bluesky has 47 million registered users, though engagement has declined as some people who tried the app later returned to X. Schneider said private-data support — the biggest developer request, in his telling — is in alpha, with a rollout planned by the end of the year, according to TechCrunch.

Those user-count and engagement characterisations are TechCrunch’s reporting from the event, not a Bluesky financial filing.

Payments plan

In a companion piece, Aisha Malik reported that Bluesky plans to introduce payments in the coming months as a first step in a strategy to make money without relying on advertising.

Schneider said people are already selling things and fundraising on the network, and that Bluesky wants to make that easier so that if you see something you like, you can support it monetarily — in a way that works across Bluesky and other apps on the network, TechCrunch reported.

Wang argued that advertising is not inevitable for social networks, pointed to Schneider’s Automattic background, and stressed Bluesky’s Public Benefit Corporation status. “First, we’ll start with payments, but I think it’s about disrupting the actual infrastructure layer, which is what we’re doing, and not just building another app,” she said, according to TechCrunch.

No launch date, payment rail, fee schedule or geography was given beyond “coming months.”

Why it matters

Attie is Bluesky’s sandbox for AI-era product ideas that may be too experimental for the main app, while still inheriting ATProto identity and Bluesky distribution. Framing creation as “social vibe coding” is an attempt to turn community energy into small, shared experiences rather than another solo chatbot session.

The payments plan is the clearer business signal: a PBC social network saying out loud that it wants monetisation paths other than ads, starting with tipping/commerce-style support for creators already selling and fundraising informally. Whether that lands as open protocol payments or a Bluesky-hosted wallet was not specified on stage, per the TechCrunch accounts.

What’s still unknown

  • When Attie’s site/game builder reaches general users, and on which platforms.
  • Which AI models ship as defaults versus bring-your-own.
  • Concrete payments product, fees, and compliance approach.
  • How private-data alpha becomes a year-end rollout.

What to watch

Watch for a Bluesky primary post or docs on Attie creation and on payments; until then, the TechCrunch Disrupt interviews are the public record.

What this means

  • Attie expands beyond custom feeds. Schneider called the new builder “social vibe coding,” per TechCrunch.
  • Payments are a plan, not a ship. “Coming months,” aimed at non-ad monetisation, per TechCrunch and Wang.
  • Attribute to TechCrunch / executives. No Bluesky blog primary in this coverage.
