Google Home Adds Local Matter Control; Philips Hue Bridges Upgrade Automatically

Google has added local Matter control in the Google Home app so that compatible Matter devices — and existing Philips Hue bridges — can be driven through Google Home hubs with faster response times and greater reliability, according to Google’s 14 October 2026 Home release notes.

For Hue owners, Google says existing Philips Hue bridges “now automatically upgrade in the background to local Matter control through Google Home hubs,” with “no re-pairing required.” The same notes say that if you have compatible Matter devices and a compatible Matter hub, you can unlock faster response times and enhanced reliability, “bringing the control experience closer to the feel of flipping a physical switch.”

What local Matter control means

Matter is the smart-home connectivity standard meant to let devices from different brands work together, often with a preference for control that stays on the local network rather than bouncing every tap through a vendor cloud. In Google’s framing, routing Hue and other Matter devices through a Google Home hub for local control is about snappier toggles and fewer cloud-dependent stalls.

A hub is still required: Google’s wording ties the Hue upgrade and the broader Matter local-control unlock to compatible Google Home / Matter hubs. Homes that lack a suitable hub will not magically gain local Matter paths from the app update alone.

What 9to5Google reported — and inferred

9to5Google reported the same release-notes lines on 14 October, calling the Hue path a welcome upgrade and noting that Hue already adopted Matter earlier. The site’s Ben Schoon wrote that local Matter control “should also allow the Home app to control Hue lights during an internet outage, so long as your device is on the same network.”

That outage-control point is 9to5Google’s inference, not a statement in Google’s release notes. TSN is attributing it to 9to5Google and not presenting it as Google’s confirmed wording.

App control refresh alongside Matter

The same 14 October notes say Google has “rebuilt the core controls for third-party lights, plugs, and switches” with a refreshed look and feel, and added a swipe-up quick settings panel on full-screen controllers for most lights, plugs, switches, fans and air purifiers — covering favourites, history, help, feedback and full settings. 9to5Google noted that redesign should apply to Hue devices as well.

Those UI changes are separate from the Matter networking path, but they land in the same release and shape how people will actually poke at the newly local-capable devices.

Why it matters

Smart-home frustration is often latency and reliability: a light that takes two seconds, or fails when the internet blips, feels broken. Google’s official promise is faster responses and greater reliability via local Matter through Home hubs, with Hue bridges migrating automatically. Whether that also covers full control during a wide internet outage is exactly the kind of detail buyers care about — and, for now, that stronger claim sits with 9to5Google’s reading rather than Google’s published notes.

The update also fits a wider Matter arms race among Apple, Google and Amazon ecosystems, where hubs and controllers compete to be the always-on local brains of the house. TSN has covered Apple’s recent Home hardware and Matter-hub positioning separately (see Related stories).

What’s still unknown

  • Exact list of Google Home hub models that count as “compatible Matter hubs” for this path.
  • Whether Google will later state outage behaviour in help docs in the terms 9to5Google inferred.
  • Roll-out timing for every Hue bridge and region (notes say features may take time to reach everyone).

What to watch

Watch Google’s Matter / Hue help articles for any explicit offline-control language, and watch whether other major lighting bridges get the same automatic local-Matter upgrade treatment.

What this means

  • Local Matter path for Hue, automatic upgrade. Existing Hue bridges move to local Matter via Google Home hubs without re-pairing, per Google.
  • Hub required. Compatible Matter devices need a compatible Matter / Google Home hub.
  • Outage control = 9to5Google’s inference. Not stated in Google’s release notes.
