Andreessen Horowitz has renamed a16z Crypto as a16z Frontier and widened its mandate beyond crypto to AI, autonomous machines and biology, managing partner Chris Dixon said in a post on the fund’s website on Thursday. The firm will keep investing in crypto, he said.
“Today we’re announcing that we’re expanding the scope of our new fund beyond crypto startups to the broader category of frontier startups: companies building new technologies and creating markets that may take years to develop,” Dixon wrote. “To reflect this, we’re renaming a16z Crypto to a16z Frontier.”
The plan was first reported by The Information‘s Leo Schwartz. Dixon’s post was published at 16:45 BST, and the old a16zcrypto.com address now redirects to the new site.
Dixon Says the Crypto Label “Matters Less Now”
Dixon argued that blockchains have faded into the background of mainstream finance. “Wall Street and fintech companies now regularly launch products built on blockchains. Does that make them crypto companies? The label matters less now,” he wrote. It makes more sense, he added, to define companies “by what they do rather than by the technologies they use”.
He stressed that crypto stays in scope. “This is an expansion: we will continue to invest in crypto and related ventures and advocate for sensible crypto regulation,” he wrote.
Dixon presented the change as a return to a long-standing approach. When he joined a16z in 2013, he wrote, he focused on long-horizon bets in two themes. New computing devices led to investments in Oculus and the drone companies Skydio and Zipline. Crypto led to Coinbase, the firm’s crypto funds and later bets on Solana and Uniswap.
AI, Autonomous Machines and Biology Are Named as Targets
The post sets out where a16z Frontier expects to look. Dixon wrote that AI has so far mostly been used to do existing work, such as coding, “faster, better, and cheaper”, and that the fund is interested in “native use cases”: “brand-new activities you couldn’t do before”. He said some new devices “will be autonomous machines that can perceive, reason, and act in the physical world”, while “others will draw on advances in biology and medicine”.
He also expects more “full-stack” start-ups that combine software, hardware and services, and new networks linking people and AI agents. Crypto, he wrote, “can give new networks native economic capabilities, enable machine-to-machine transactions, and create new ways to bootstrap them.”
The fund’s new about page lists “AI, biology, crypto, and hardware — including VR, wearables, and robotics” as its areas, and says a16z Frontier is “drawn to the outer planets, the outliers and edge cases that don’t fit neatly into preset categories”. Dixon called his list “examples, not boundaries”.
The Same Five People Will Lead the Fund
“I’ll be leading the fund along with the firm’s founders Marc and Ben, and GPs Eddy Lazzarin and Guy Wuollet,” Dixon wrote, referring to Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz. CoinDesk and Decrypt reported the same line-up. Dixon said the fund’s operating teams will continue to support portfolio companies on regulation, go-to-market, talent, marketing and technical research.
The post gives no size for a16z Frontier. Decrypt reported that, as a result, “the latest figure on record is the $2.2 billion announced in May”. Decrypt also reported that a16z said in January it had raised more than $15bn across all its funds.
Paradigm, Framework and Haun Have Made Similar Moves, CoinDesk Reports
According to CoinDesk, a16z is the latest crypto-focused investor to look beyond digital assets. CoinDesk reported that Paradigm raised $1.2bn in July to invest in AI, robotics and other technologies, that Framework Ventures raised $400m in June to expand into AI, energy, fintech and tokenisation, and that Haun Ventures broadened towards AI and financial services with a $1bn raise in May. TSN has not checked those figures with the firms.
The Rename Widens the Mandate but Discloses No New Money
The change matters because of who is making it. Dixon credits the firm’s crypto theme with bets on Coinbase, Solana and Uniswap, and Decrypt reported that Ben Horowitz said in January the firm’s future “starts with winning the key architectures of the future—AI and crypto”. The new name puts crypto alongside other sectors rather than at the top. For founders in robotics, AI applications or biology, the practical effect is one more large fund that says it wants to hear from them; Dixon’s post ends with an invitation to founders “building what comes next”. The wider firm has already been active in these areas: TSN has reported a16z co-leading Eka Robotics’ $150m Series A, joining ASI’s $325m round and leading TypeSafe AI’s $870m raise. Those reports did not say which a16z fund invested.
What the announcement does not contain matters as much. There is no fund size, no change to the fund’s terms, no named new investments and no allocation between crypto and other sectors. The leadership is unchanged. Dixon’s argument that the crypto label “matters less” is a statement of strategy, and it will be tested by where the fund’s next cheques go.
Next: Watch for a16z Frontier’s First Non-Crypto Deals
“If you are a founder building what comes next, please reach out,” Dixon wrote at the end of his post. The first deals announced under the a16z Frontier name, and whether they are in crypto, robotics or biology, will show how far the new mandate stretches.
