Gemini file editing has arrived in the Gemini app: Google says users can now generate, preview and edit documents, PDFs, presentations, spreadsheets and code without leaving a chat. The announcement on Google’s blog on 29 October says the feature is available to all users, in all languages, wherever the Gemini app is offered.
There is a split by platform. PDF preview and editing works on both the web and mobile, while every other format (Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide decks, Markdown files, TXT files and code) is supported on the web only for now.
In brief
- The Gemini app can now preview and edit the files it creates, with full-screen editing and highlight-to-ask.
- PDFs work on web and mobile; Docs, Sheets, slides, Markdown, TXT and code are web-only.
- Google lists no admin control for the feature, and it covers Workspace, Workspace Individual and personal accounts.
How Gemini file editing works in a chat
Until now, a file Gemini produced was something to download or open elsewhere. Under the new set-up, the file appears inside the conversation. Users can expand it to full screen and type changes directly, highlight a passage to ask a question about it, or ask Gemini to refine the file for them.
Google’s own example is a student who uploads handwritten lecture notes and asks for a PDF study guide, then edits it by hand, highlights sections for Gemini to rework “text or visuals”, and asks follow-up questions. The @GeminiApp account on X used the same example when it announced the change.
The Verge described another use: highlighting a table and asking Gemini to turn it into a graph.
Slides, Sheets and Drive: the Workspace detail
The fuller list sits in Google’s Workspace Updates post, published the same day. For presentations, Gemini can draft outlines or slide content, show a preview of the layout in chat and adjust tone and structure, before the deck is opened in Google Slides or downloaded as a PPTX or PDF file.
For spreadsheets, Gemini can build “structured trackers, tables, and data models from a prompt”, preview them and open them directly in Google Sheets. For documents, users can draft PDFs, Google Docs, LaTeX, Markdown or TXT files, edit them inline or in full-screen view, and upload them all to Drive.
The editing layer builds on file generation Google added in April. Its earlier Workspace post listed Google Docs, Sheets and Slides, PDF, Word, Excel, CSV, LaTeX, plain text, Rich Text Format and Markdown as output formats, and said Gemini “currently supports generating one file per prompt”. Google has not said whether that limit has changed.
Who gets it, and what admins can control
Google says there is “no admin control for this feature”; administrators can only switch the Gemini app on or off for their organisation. Users of all ages who have access to the Gemini app can generate files. Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains have it now, and it is available to all Google Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers and people using personal Google accounts.
Google has not published pricing or usage limits for the feature. For UK readers, the wording is broader than some recent Gemini launches: its personal intelligence feature on Android Auto launched with the UK excluded, while this update names no country exceptions.
Why in-chat editing changes Gemini’s job
This is a small feature with a large implication. Generating a file and then sending the user off to Docs or Slides kept Gemini in the role of a drafting tool. Letting people edit, question and refine the file in the same window makes the chat itself the place where documents are finished, which is the role Google’s own productivity apps have held for years.
The competitive context is plain. The Verge notes that Anthropic launched document and presentation editing in Claude chats earlier this year, and TSN has covered Anthropic packaging ready-made artifacts for lawyers. Google is closing that gap across a much larger user base, and its export paths still lead back to Slides, Sheets and Drive, so the change tightens rather than loosens its own ecosystem.
For IT teams, the absence of a dedicated admin switch is the detail worth noting. Files that users create and edit inside Gemini can be uploaded to Drive, where they would presumably sit under an organisation’s existing Drive settings, but organisations that want to restrict this specific capability have only the blunt option of disabling the Gemini app. With Google also winding down Jules and pushing Gemini 4 Carbon to specialist users first, the company is consolidating more work into fewer Gemini surfaces. Mobile support beyond PDFs is the obvious gap.
Mobile is the next test
Google has given no date for bringing Docs, Sheets, slides and code editing to the Gemini mobile apps. Until it does, the full feature is a desktop browser tool, with PDFs the only format editable on a phone.
