Gemini Can Now Use Your Gmail and Calendar on Android Auto, Except in the UK

“What’s my flight gate? And is my flight on time?” That is the kind of question Google wants drivers to put to Gemini from now on, with the assistant digging the answer out of their own inbox. Google said on 20 October that it is rolling out Personal Intelligence for Gemini on Android Auto, linking the in-car assistant to Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Photos, Google Maps, YouTube and Search.

The catch for TSN’s British readers sits in a footnote. Personal Intelligence is rolling out to eligible accounts “globally, excluding the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and Nigeria,” according to Google’s announcement. Gemini itself, Google says, is now available globally on Android Auto and in cars with Google built-in; it is the personal layer that UK drivers will not get yet.

Gemini answers from your own apps, if you switch it on

Personal Intelligence already exists in the Gemini app. In the car, Google says, it has two jobs: retrieving specific details from an email, a photo or a place saved in Google Maps, and reasoning across several of those sources at once. Google’s examples are built around not touching a phone. A driver can say “Take me to my doctor’s appointment” without knowing the address, or “Find the car wash from the photo I took last week and navigate there.”

It also leans on habits. Asked to “find me an indoor restaurant along my route that matches my usual vibe,” Gemini will shortlist places that fit a vegetarian’s needs if it knows the driver is vegetarian, Google says.

The feature is opt-in. “Your apps aren’t connected until you choose to turn it on, and you can turn it off anytime in your Gemini settings,” Google wrote. Anyone who has already enabled Personal Intelligence in the Gemini app will find it carries over to the car, both Google and 9to5Google noted, so for those users the in-car version arrives switched on. Without it, navigation, music, calls and general questions still work, but answers are not tailored to the person asking.

Eligibility is narrower than “global” suggests

The rollout covers eligible personal Google accounts held by people aged 18 and over. Workspace business, enterprise and education accounts are excluded, Google’s footnote says, and Android Authority reported the same limits. That leaves out work and school accounts managed through Workspace.

Timing also differs by car. The feature is “rolling out starting today on Android Auto and in the coming months on cars with Google built-in”, the vehicles 9to5Google describes as running Android Automotive. Google gave no date or list of car makers for that second phase. For built-in cars, it added a condition: they “only share personal responses when you’re in the car with your phone connected”.

Google has not said why the UK, the EEA, Switzerland and Nigeria are excluded, or when that might change.

In-car assistants are moving from commands to context

Android Authority framed the appeal plainly: asking about your own emails and appointments could mean “fewer reasons to reach for your phone while driving”. It also noted that giving an assistant access across a Google account “might not appeal to everyone”, which is why the opt-in matters.

Google is not alone in pushing personal AI into the dashboard. Rivian’s chief executive said last week that AI agents from companies such as Anthropic are coming to Rivian cars. Google’s advantage is that the data drivers would want to query, from flight confirmations to saved restaurants, already sits in its own apps.

For UK drivers, the practical position on 20 October is simple: Gemini can take their questions on Android Auto, but asking it for the gate number on tomorrow’s flight still means finding the email themselves.
