Bundeswehr Orders Six TYTAN Mobile Counter-Drone Systems, EU Notice Shows

Germany’s armed forces are buying six counter-drone systems designed to protect troops on the move, and the order has gone to Munich defence technology company TYTAN Technologies. The Bundeswehr’s procurement office, BAAINBw, awarded the contract on 16 October, according to a contract award notice published on the EU’s TED tender platform on 21 October.

The notice lists six systems of the type “TYTAN Drone Defender 2 TYTAN C2-Van”. It falls under a programme called SMoK3D, short for “Schutz mobiler Kräfte gegen UAS”, or protection of mobile forces against unmanned aircraft. The notice describes the purchase as a system for detecting and engaging very small and small drones. It gives no contract value, and no delivery dates have been published.

German defence outlet hartpunkt reported the award, and AdriaDefense followed the same day.

A G-Class with interceptor drones, according to hartpunkt

The notice itself says little about the hardware. According to information obtained by hartpunkt, the Drone Defender is a mobile system built on the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, developed by TYTAN with Mercedes-Benz and first shown at the ILA air show in Berlin and at Eurosatory in Paris this year.

hartpunkt says the chassis is a long-wheelbase G 350 d, which Mercedes-Benz rates at a gross weight of 4.9 tonnes with up to 2.5 tonnes of payload. TYTAN’s modular launch container sits on the back. Configurations shown at recent trade fairs carried two Metis and four EOS interceptor drones, with an IRIS radar from Robin Radar on an extendable mast and a control station in the cab, the outlet reports.

The interceptor figures are company specifications as reported by hartpunkt. Metis, aimed at larger NATO class 2 drones, flies at more than 350 km/h, can engage targets up to 60 km away and as high as 5 km, and carries a warhead of about 1 kg. The smaller TI-2 EOS, for class 1 drones and below, reaches more than 200 km/h and brings down targets by ramming them at ranges of up to 20 km. Ground radar steers both towards the target, and AI-assisted guidance takes over once the drone’s camera has it in view, according to hartpunkt.

How the six ordered systems will be configured is not stated in the notice. AdriaDefense also notes that the public procurement information does not establish the exact setup of all six vehicles.

TYTAN’s growing Bundeswehr ties

The order builds on earlier work with the German military. AdriaDefense says BAAINBw agreed in October 2025 to have TYTAN develop a counter-drone demonstrator for protecting Bundeswehr installations, and that the company signed a memorandum of understanding with Mercedes-Benz at ILA in June 2026 covering both the G-Class and the Sprinter van. At Eurosatory, Mercedes-Benz showed a version developed with TYTAN and vehicle converter BINZ, according to the outlet.

The award also follows a separate BAAINBw contract for net-firing interceptor drones to protect military sites, which TSN reported last week. That deal targets fixed installations; SMoK3D is about units on the move. For now, the TED notice confirms the buyer, the supplier, the number of systems and the award date, and leaves cost and timing open.
