ByteDance’s Seed research unit says it has established an Alignment & Preparedness team to strengthen its AI models’ safety and alignment, and that it plans to hire 10 researchers worldwide to staff it.
The Seed blog post, dated 14 October 2026 and listed under Recruitment, is a company announcement. It does not name a team lead, give a budget or say which Seed models will be covered first.
What Seed announced
“Seed recently established an Alignment & Preparedness team to further strengthen its models’ safety and alignment capabilities,” the post says.
Seed says it is “committed to investing in this field for the long term” and will give the team “resources and support commensurate with frontier model research.” It plans to “initially recruit 10 researchers worldwide” to “advance model capabilities and safety in tandem.”
The roles are in Beijing, Shanghai and San Jose. Seed posted separate application links for experienced hires and campus recruitment in Beijing and Shanghai, and for San Jose roles.
What the team would work on
Seed groups the work into four themes:
- Safety foundations and processes — model specifications and safety policies, rigorous safety evaluation systems, and improving models’ ability to spot and defend against risks.
- Improving model safety — safety and alignment training across pre-training, mid-training, supervised fine-tuning (SFT) and reinforcement learning (RL), including “safety adversary training through attacker–defender self-play.”
- Emerging and unknown risks — more generalisable safety training, better judgment, stronger monitorability and guardrails, and better attribution when new risks appear.
- External partners — independent third-party evaluations, collaboration with universities and research institutions, and learning from issues users hit in real-world use.
Named research areas
The post lists these as focus areas:
- safety evaluation and benchmarks for frontier models and agents;
- alignment training for frontier model capabilities;
- automated red teaming;
- monitorability of model capabilities and behaviour;
- interpretability of model behaviour;
- safety and alignment data synthesis, and agent environment development; and
- preparedness for future model risks.
In plain English, that covers measuring how safely models behave, training them to refuse or handle harmful requests, probing them with automated attacks, watching what they do, trying to understand why, building better training data and test environments, and preparing for risks that may appear as systems get more capable.
Who Seed says it wants
Seed says it welcomes researchers from a wide range of backgrounds, including people with experience in foundation-model safety, alignment, evaluations, red teaming, reinforcement learning, agents or systems security. It emphasises first-principles thinking, fast learning and a belief in the long-term value of AI safety.
What candidates can expect, according to the post: compute “needed to sustain research on frontier models,” a chance to work on hard problems that the field does not yet have mature answers for, and a path to fold safety research into training, evaluation and deployment so capabilities can be used “safely and reliably in real-world products and services.”
Why it matters
As models get more capable, labs face pressure to show they are measuring and reducing risks, not only shipping features. A dedicated alignment and preparedness team is one way large AI groups signal that safety work has its own staff and resources. Seed’s post puts that work beside “frontier model research” in resource terms, and says safety should advance “in tandem” with capability.
ByteDance is also in the news for chip and regulation stories. TSN has reported talks about custom MediaTek chips for its data centres and an EU court adviser’s opinion on TikTok’s DMA gatekeeper label. Today’s Seed post is about research staffing inside the Seed unit, not those other tracks.
What we don’t know
- Who leads the team, and how many people are already on it.
- How the San Jose roles relate to US product or compliance work.
- Whether Seed will publish third-party evaluation results, and when.
- How this compares with safety teams at other Chinese or US labs; TSN has not verified outside claims about “first” status.
What this means
- A new Seed safety team. ByteDance Seed says Alignment & Preparedness is up and hiring.
- Ten initial research roles. Posts are open in Beijing, Shanghai and San Jose.
- Broad safety agenda. Evaluations, alignment training, red teaming, monitorability, interpretability and preparedness are all listed.
