Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has launched a four-week pilot of the “Dubai Glydways automated transit system” on a dedicated guideway at Bluewaters, owned by Dubai Retail, part of Dubai Holding. The RTA announced it on 11 October 2026. Director-General Mattar Al Tayer watched the launch with Glydways co-CEOs Mark Seeger and Blake Barber, then took a five-minute ride marking the start [1][2].
Confirmed: the RTA launched the pilot (RTA statement, via Emirates 24|7 and TradeArabia). Every performance and cost figure below is an RTA claim, and TSN has not seen it tested.
What is a guideway pod system?
It uses small driverless electric vehicles on their own narrow track, apart from road traffic. A robotaxi shares ordinary roads with other drivers. A metro runs large trains between fixed stations. A pod system sits between: small vehicles that run on request, but only along their own track. This is TSN background, not RTA wording.
What the RTA says
- Each vehicle carries four to six passengers, at up to 50km/h, for up to 250 km per charge [1].
- Each has 20 high-resolution LiDAR sensors, plus radar and cameras. LiDAR (light detection and ranging) times reflected laser pulses to build a 3D picture of the surroundings (TSN background) [1].
- The system is “capable of transporting more than 20,000 passengers per hour in both directions”, with “capital costs reduced by up to 90 per cent and operating costs by up to 70 per cent compared with similar transport systems” [1].
None of this is new: the RTA made the same capacity and cost claims when it signed its Glydways agreement in February [3]. Emirates 24|7’s headline says “AI-powered”; the RTA’s own text says “supported by artificial intelligence technologies”, without saying what the AI does [1].
The pilot will assess vehicle performance, safety, reliability, user experience and journey times. Routes under study include a 2.8km link from National Paints Metro Station to Bluewaters, plus Jumeirah Village, Festival City, Business Bay and Mohammed Bin Rashid City [1].
What is not known
- Who can ride. The RTA does not say whether the pilot carries public passengers or is a test only.
- Dates. Only “four weeks” is given, with no start or end dates.
- The cost baseline. “Similar transport systems” is not defined.
- Fares. None for the pilot. In February Seeger said fares would be “the same cost as a bus or a train ticket” [4].
- Approval and contract. The RTA cites a cooperation agreement and a public-private partnership. No contract value or approval for public service has been published.
- Results. No safety or ridership data exists yet.
