Facebook Launches “Your Algorithm”, Letting You Tell Feed and Reels What You Want in Your Own Words

Facebook is rolling out a feature called “Your algorithm” that lets people type in the topics they want to see in their Feed and Reels, instead of leaving it entirely to the app to guess. Meta announced it in a newsroom post on 13 October 2026 [1].

What “the algorithm” means here

Facebook does not show posts in the order they were published. A ranking system, usually called “the algorithm”, picks and orders posts and videos for each person. Until now it has mostly worked by watching what you do: what you like, comment on, share and watch, along with thousands of other signals, Meta says [1]. You could hide posts or say you were not interested, but you could not simply tell it what you wanted.

What is new

“We’re rolling out Your algorithm, where you can directly add and manage the topics you want to see in Feed and Reels,” Meta says. “You can find it in the three-dot menu” [1].

Meta is also adding follow-up questions to its existing feedback buttons. “After clicking ‘Interested’ or ‘Not interested,’ we may ask follow up questions for more detail on what you liked or disliked,” the company says. You can answer in your own words, and Meta says “your recommendations will update in real time” [1].

The three-dot menu on every post has been redesigned to make these options easier to find, according to the post [1].

How AI is involved

Meta says large language models (LLMs), the type of AI behind chatbots, are what make this possible. “Now, large language models are helping us take a genuine leap forward,” the post says. Because LLMs can understand ordinary written language, Meta says they let the ranking system take in what you type alongside everything else it knows about you, “unlocking an algorithm you can actually talk to” [1].

Meta says the system can change “within the same session”, meaning what you see can shift during a single visit rather than over days [1].

Where and when

Meta says only that the feature is rolling out. It did not say which countries get it first or when it will reach everyone [1].

What this means

  • More direct control. Users can state their interests instead of relying only on what the app infers from their behaviour.
  • AI in ranking. Meta is putting language models directly into how Facebook chooses posts.
  • Claims to watch. How much the results actually improve is Meta’s own description; there is no independent measure yet.
