Generate Biomedicines and Zealand Pharma Team Up to Design Obesity Protein Drugs With AI

US biotech company Generate Biomedicines and Danish drugmaker Zealand Pharma said on 13 October 2026 that they will work together to design new protein medicines for obesity and other metabolic diseases using Generate’s artificial intelligence platform.

What the deal involves

In its announcement, Generate said the two companies plan to “design and develop multispecific protein therapeutics for obesity and other metabolic diseases using The Generate Platform, which integrates generative AI with high-throughput experimental validation.”

In plain terms, Generate uses AI to propose new protein designs, then makes and tests large numbers of them in the lab, feeding the results back to improve the next round of designs. A “multispecific” drug is one designed to act on more than one biological target at the same time. Reuters explained that Zealand believes such medicines could tackle several disease pathways linked to obesity in a single drug, an approach drugmakers are increasingly exploring.

The deal covers two initial programmes, with an option to add a third.

Who does what

Generate will lead the research, using its AI platform, up to the point of picking a lead drug candidate. After that, according to the release, Zealand “will assume responsibility for subsequent clinical development, regulatory submissions, and worldwide commercialization.” That means Zealand runs the human trials, seeks approval from regulators and sells any resulting medicine around the world.

The money

For the two initial programmes, Generate said it will receive:

  • $30 million upfront;
  • up to $35 million in early preclinical milestones, meaning payments for hitting research goals before any human testing;
  • eligibility for total milestones of nearly $1.2 billion, covering development, regulatory and commercial goals; and
  • tiered royalties on future worldwide net sales of any products that reach the market. Tiered royalties are a share of sales that rises as sales grow.

Most of that total depends on drugs succeeding in trials and reaching the market, which may never happen. Zealand’s own release, published on GlobeNewswire, gives the same figures.

Reuters reported that Generate’s shares rose about 5% in after-hours trading following the announcement.

Why Zealand wants proteins

Zealand has built its business on peptides, which are short chains of amino acids, smaller than full proteins. Zealand’s chief scientific officer, Utpal Singh, said the deal “expands our toolbox to include proteins, complementing our existing small-molecule and peptide capabilities.”

Reuters noted that Zealand is already developing the obesity drug petrelintide with Roche, under an agreement worth up to $5.3 billion signed last year.

Generate’s chief executive, Mike Nally, said the teams will “first define what a great medicine for patients looks like for each of the two initial programs, and then leverage The Generate Platform to design multispecific candidates that meet or exceed that profile.”

What this means

  • AI drug design is moving into obesity, one of the most competitive areas in medicine.
  • Only $30 million is guaranteed now. The nearly $1.2 billion headline depends on milestones that may never be reached.
  • The targets are not public. Neither company has said which biological targets the programmes will aim at, or when any drug might reach human trials.
