Google’s Universal Cart is now available in the United States across Google Search and the Gemini app, the company said in a blog post dated 15 October 2026. The cart lets shoppers save products from multiple retailers in one place, track price and stock changes, surface promo codes and payment suggestions, and check out through Google Pay or by transferring items to a merchant’s own site.
Checkout is powered by the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP). Google previewed the cart at I/O on 19 May 2026 and had earlier talked about a summer window; today’s post is the US launch.
What shoppers can do
Google lists four core jobs for the cart:
- Save across retailers wherever someone is shopping on Google — for example a handbag saved in AI Mode in Search and later a sweater and lip gloss saved in the Gemini app all land in the same cart.
- Watch price and inventory using Google’s Shopping Graph of 60-plus billion continually refreshed listings, with notifications on price drops or restocks.
- Surface savings and payment perks — promo codes in-cart, and payment-method suggestions built on Google Wallet card benefits.
- Check out securely with Google Pay in-cart at participating stores, or transfer items to the merchant’s cart to finish on the merchant site. Example merchants named include Nike, Sephora, Target, Ulta Beauty, Walmart, Wayfair and many Shopify merchants. Merchants remain the seller of record and handle confirmations and support.
How Google positions it
Suresh Ganapathy, senior director of product management for consumer shopping, framed Universal Cart as the “practical tools” track of Google’s commerce work — alongside a separate push into agentic capabilities that act on the user’s behalf. The cart is meant to mirror how people already shop across Google without losing items, savings or trusted merchants.
Holiday timing and trust language
Google’s post explicitly pitches Universal Cart for the holiday shopping season — organising multi-store lists, catching restocks and applying promos without a pile of browser tabs. Trust language is careful: even when checkout happens inside Google’s cart via Google Pay, the merchant stays seller of record. That matters for returns, support and regulatory responsibility as Google inserts itself earlier in the shopping path.
Agentic vs assisted
Google splits its commerce roadmap into agentic systems that act on the user’s behalf and “practical tools” that keep the shopper in control. Universal Cart is filed under the second track. The UCP rails and Wallet-aware payment suggestions are still relevant to the agent payments race TSN has covered, because the same checkout plumbing can later serve agents — but today’s launch is a human-driven cart across Search and Gemini, not an autonomous buyer.
Why it matters
A shared cart across Search and Gemini is a step toward commerce that follows the user through Google’s AI surfaces, not only classic Shopping results. TSN has covered the broader agent-payments race and consumer AI app launches such as Google’s Playground. Universal Cart is still shopper-controlled checkout, not a fully autonomous buy agent — but UCP and Wallet hooks are the rails agents would later need.
Caveats
US-only at launch. Secondary reports about future Gmail or YouTube integration are not in Google’s launch post with a timeline, so they are omitted here. Shopping Graph scale and “intelligent” payment suggestions are company descriptions.
