Bill Gross — the Idealab founder behind companies such as GoTo.com, not Microsoft’s Bill Gates — is launching Idealab.ai, a free AI platform that Axios (Ina Fried, 19 October 2026) says “has analyzed more than 17 million sources and generated 1.2 million potential businesses.”
Axios adds: “He plans to give all the ideas away — and even help with financing.” TSN confirmed the site is live and labelled Free on 19 October 2026, with an on-page counter in the region of 1.2 million ideas. Because that counter ticks, this post follows the brief and says more than 1.2 million.
What Axios reports
According to Axios, Idealab.ai lets people filter ideas by field of interest, geography, size of market opportunity, required capital, team size, degree of automation and other metrics. “Each idea comes with a business brief, potential customers, competitors, first steps and reasons it might fail.”
Axios says the underlying sources include news stories, research papers, patents, company filings and community discussions, and that Gross built a “Periodic Table of Business Functions” covering 118 jobs involved in running a company. On the live site, that Periodic Table is marked “Coming soon in 2027.”
Gross remains CEO of licensing and revenue-sharing system ProRata.ai, Axios reports. He says Idealab and Idealab Studio “have launched more than 175 companies, including GoTo.com, Citysearch and Tickets.com.” Idealab let him start 12 companies at once; his ambition now is to help support 12,000. “I’ll put everything into this because this is more leverage,” he told Axios.
On strategic choices such as how much risk to take, Gross said: “AI is not going to make that one for you.”
Cloudflare partnership — Axios only
Axios: “Cloudflare is the first announced partner, offering $100,000 in credits to companies started through the platform.” Gross hopes it will be the first of many such partnerships.
TSN did not find a separate Cloudflare press release confirming the $100,000 credits. Treat that figure and “first announced partner” wording as Axios reporting, not as an independently verified Cloudflare announcement.
What the site itself shows
On idealab.ai, the product is presented as:
- Free access to a large idea engine (counter more than 1.2 million).
- A three-step flow: tell us about you → find your idea → make it your own.
- Sample idea cards with “Capital to start”, “Time to market” and a source count, with the footnote “Financial estimates drawn from sources.**”
- A private IP/patent track promising, among other things, “a 90-day roadmap.”
Those capital and time figures are Idealab.ai’s AI-generated estimates, not audited business plans.
Partner quotes on the site (UK angle first)
The site carries supporting quotes from organisations Gross is courting. Verbatim excerpts TSN checked on the page:
- Imperial College London — Mary Ryan, Vice-Provost, Research and Enterprise: “Idealab.ai is a shortcut to product-market fit and I am excited to put it in the hands of our students …”
- Cloudflare — Matthew Prince, co-founder and CEO: “… Idealab.ai’s ambition to make entrepreneurship more accessible aligns with our work to help new businesses build and grow online.”
- Arizona State University — Dr Michael Crow, president: pairs Idealab.ai with “the creativity and abilities of the 200,000 degree-seeking students that enroll annually…”
- Caltech — Fred Farina, chief innovation and corporate partnerships officer: expanding entrepreneurial programmes and looking forward to “bringing even more ideas to students and graduates with this system.”
- Endeavor — Linda Rottenberg, co-founder and CEO: “Idealab.ai brings that same force to the very start of the journey, putting a million ideas in front of the people who will build …”
Other named voices on the site include the Global Entrepreneurship Network, Columbia Business School’s Rita Gunther McGrath, Flat6Labs and Janngo. Quotes above are site-hosted endorsements, not separate press releases TSN verified elsewhere.
How to read the numbers
| Claim | Source | How to label it |
|---|---|---|
| More than 17 million sources analysed; 1.2 million potential businesses | Axios | Reported |
| On-site counter more than 1.2 million; labelled Free | idealab.ai (checked 19 Oct 2026) | Confirmed live |
| Cloudflare $100,000 credits | Axios | Reported; no Cloudflare release found |
| Capital / time-to-market on idea cards | Idealab.ai (starred estimates) | AI-generated by the platform |
| 175+ Idealab companies; 12 → 12,000 ambition | Axios / Gross | His figures |
Caveats
- This is Bill Gross of Idealab and ProRata.ai, not Bill Gates.
- Idea counts, briefs and cost/time estimates are AI-generated by Idealab.ai — not independently vetted business plans.
- The 17 million sources figure and Cloudflare $100,000 credits come from Axios, not a found Cloudflare release.
- Financing help is promised in Axios’s wording; mechanics are not spelled out in the materials TSN checked.
- Partner quotes live on Idealab.ai’s homepage; they are not substitutes for customer traction metrics.
What’s still unknown
- How financing help will work in practice
- Whether Cloudflare will publish its own credits terms
- How often the idea corpus refreshes, and how failures are tracked
- Any independent audit of idea quality
What this means
Per Axios on 19 October 2026, Idealab founder Bill Gross is launching free Idealab.ai, which he says has turned more than 17 million sources into 1.2 million potential businesses he plans to give away — with Cloudflare named as the first partner offering $100,000 in credits (Axios only). The site is live, free, and shows more than 1.2 million ideas, with Imperial College London among the UK-facing partners quoted on the page. Treat the corpus as an AI idea engine, not a catalogue of proven startups, and remember Gross’s own line: AI will not make the hard strategic risk choices for you.
