CoinDesk reported on 9 October 2026 that the bitcoin miner MARA Holdings moved a large batch of coins to an address labelled as Galaxy Digital’s. Nobody has said the coins were sold, and MARA has not commented.
What was reported
Reported (CoinDesk), with the on-chain data attributed to Lookonchain. In CoinDesk’s words: “MARA transferred approximately 996 BTC, worth $81.13 million, to a Galaxy Digital address, according to data flagged by Lookonchain.” [1] Lookonchain is an analytics account that tracks large wallets. Its post includes a screenshot from Arkham, another analytics platform, labelling the sending address “MARA: Miner” and the receiving one “Galaxy Digital” [2]. Those labels are Arkham’s, not a statement from either company. Lookonchain’s headline treats the move as a sale; the data it shows is a transfer.
What is not confirmed
CoinDesk is clear: “the transfer alone does not confirm that Galaxy Digital GLXY executed a sale.” [1] Neither source gives a reason for the transfer or says what happened to the coins. CoinDesk’s article carries no MARA comment. On 10 October, MARA’s press-release page listed nothing newer than its 6 August results, and its X account, @MARA, showed no posts since 8 October [3].
The background figures
CoinDesk says MARA “held 53,822 BTC on Feb. 26, according to Bitcoin Treasuries’s historical holdings data. Its holdings decreased steadily to 35,577 by Aug. 7.” [1] TSN could check only the later figure: Bitcoin Treasuries’ MARA page showed 35,577 BTC [4]. CoinDesk adds: “In March, it sold 15,133 BTC for approximately $1.1 billion, primarily to fund the repurchase of convertible debt.” [1] MARA’s own release confirms the March sale, made between 4 and 25 March 2026 [3].
Why a transfer like this is ambiguous
An on-chain transfer shows coins moving between two addresses, not why. Galaxy describes a business covering “capital, markets, custody”, with more than 1,700 institutional trading counterparties and a $1.4 billion average loan book in the second quarter of 2026 [5]. A firm with that range can receive coins for several reasons, and the blockchain alone does not say which applies. TSN made the same point about miner outflows, which “can mean selling, but also moving coins to custodians or paying costs”, and about government-linked wallets moving bitcoin toward an exchange. The Bottom Line
CoinDesk reports, citing Lookonchain, that about 996 BTC ($81.13 million) moved from a MARA-labelled address to a Galaxy Digital-labelled one. The labels come from Arkham. No sale is confirmed, no reason has been given, and MARA has not commented. Until MARA or Galaxy says what the transfer was, it remains a transfer. This is not investment advice.
