In brief
- On X, Elon Musk wrote: “Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America. This will be the first of many.”
- For parents and markets, outlets estimate that at recent SpaceX prices this would be on the order of about $10.5 billion if “kid” means every minor — Axios’s and CNBC’s maths, not Musk’s.
- What’s still unknown: how shares would be delivered, who counts as a kid, and any SpaceX confirmation — SpaceX has not commented.
This is Musk’s claim on X. There is no mechanism, no eligibility rule and no SpaceX statement in the materials TSN checked. Do not treat it as a filed programme.
What exactly did Musk say?
Musk posted on 19 October 2026 (07:52 UTC):
Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America.
This will be the first of many.

He did not define “kid,” did not say how delivery would work, and did not name a legal wrapper.
How does this relate to Anthropic’s Public Benefit Fund?
The claim followed Musk’s replies to Anthropic’s Public Benefit Fund announcement. CNBC notes he had replied that he recommends “giving the shares directly to the public” and that “this is what I will be doing.”
TSN’s Anthropic post covers that fund separately. This post is only about Musk’s SpaceX-share claim.
What size do Axios and CNBC put on it?
| Estimate | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| People under 18 in the US | just over 72 million (Census) | Axios |
| SpaceX Friday close used | $146.03 | Axios / CNBC |
| Implied giveaway value | a little over / about $10.5 billion | Axios; CNBC |
| Musk SpaceX shares (Aug SEC filing) | about 4.8 billion | CNBC |
| With unvested awards/options | 6.4 billion (48.4% beneficial stake) | CNBC |
Axios also frames the idea as a roughly $11 billion giveaway “at current stock prices” and notes Musk “did not specify if ‘kid’ meant all minors under 18.”
These are outlet estimates. Musk did not publish a dollar figure.
Has SpaceX confirmed anything?
No. CNBC says it “has reached out to SpaceX for further comment.” TSN found no SpaceX statement confirming a programme, timeline or transfer method.
What is still not known?
- Distribution method (brokerage accounts, custodians, or anything else — not stated)
- Age cut-off for “kid”
- Tax, securities-law or custody treatment
- Whether any shares would be transferred at all
TSN is not repeating speculation about Trump accounts or Invest America.
Our read
As written, this is a one-line equity-gift pledge without an operating plan. The Anthropic contrast Musk drew — give shares to the public rather than park them in a fund — is political and corporate signalling; until SpaceX or Musk publishes mechanics, the only hard facts are the X wording and third-party size estimates.
What’s still unknown?
- Any SpaceX or formal Musk filing that turns the post into a programme
- Eligibility, custody and securities compliance path
- Whether “first of many” refers to more share gifts or other assets
How we sourced this
- Exact wording verified from Musk’s X post 2112089556615123114 (19 October 2026).
- Scale estimates from Axios (Ben Berkowitz) and CNBC; share-count from CNBC’s August SEC filing reference.
- Anthropic context linked to TSN post 22862. No mechanism invented; no Trump/Invest America speculation.
