CONFIRMED (NVIDIA): This is based on NVIDIA’s own GeForce news post. All performance figures are NVIDIA’s claims and have not been independently tested.
NVIDIA says the AI model behind DLSS 5, its graphics technology for games, is getting a big speed-up this week, and is coming to more games and to RTX Spark laptops [1].
What is DLSS 5?
DLSS is NVIDIA’s family of AI tools for games. DLSS 5 adds what NVIDIA calls “3D-Guided Neural Rendering”: an AI model that takes the frame the game engine has drawn and adds more lifelike lighting and material detail as a final step [1]. It launched last month in NBA 2K27.
What changes (NVIDIA’S CLAIMS)
According to NVIDIA [1], the October update:
- makes the model’s performance 2X faster this week;
- shrinks the model by 24% to roughly 118 million parameters (a parameter is one of the numbers a model learns);
- cuts 4K video-memory (VRAM) use by 20%;
- gives half the GPU overhead of the September version, “while maintaining comparable visual fidelity”;
- makes the model 10X faster overall than when it was announced in March.
When and where
- 16 October: the faster model comes to NBA 2K27 on GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs, RTX Spark laptops and GeForce NOW, “boosting frame rates by up to 1.4X”, NVIDIA says. DLSS 5 also arrives on RTX Spark laptops the same day [1].
- 23 October: DLSS 5 is added to RTX Remix, NVIDIA’s tool for modders remastering older games [1].
- 5 November: DLSS 5 comes to Hogwarts Legacy [1].
- Late November: DLSS 5 comes to Where Winds Meet [1].
NVIDIA has also released a beta “Performance Mode” for Frame Generation, labelled “Preset C” in the NVIDIA app. It swaps one of the two AI models used for generating extra frames for a lighter algorithm, with “minor trade-offs in image quality”. NVIDIA says it is up to 35% faster on a GeForce RTX 5060 [1].
What this means
- Smaller AI models can mean faster games. NVIDIA’s pitch is better lighting without as big a hit to frame rates.
- These are vendor numbers. Independent tests will show how the speed-up holds up across games and cards.
- More hardware is covered, including NVIDIA’s new RTX Spark laptops.
