The Financial Times reported on 10 October 2026 that Nvidia “is in talks to acquire or deepen its investment in US start-up Reflection AI”, citing “people with direct knowledge of the matter” [1]. This is a report, not an announcement. Neither company has confirmed it, and no deal value has been reported.
What was reported
Reflection AI develops open-weight models, which the FT says President Donald Trump’s administration hopes will rival cheap Chinese alternatives [1]. Open-weight means the trained model files are published so others can run them.
Reuters, summarising the FT story, says the talks are at an early stage and could take several forms [2]. One is a so-called acqui-hire, where Nvidia would hire staff and license technology instead of buying the whole company. Reuters adds that an agreement could come in the coming weeks, but the talks could still fall apart [2]. Reuters could not immediately verify the report, and Nvidia and Reflection had not yet responded to its requests for comment [2].
Why it is worth watching
Reflection introduced its first open-weight model, Beam, on 5 October and plans to release the weights later this month; we covered what Beam is and what Reflection claims for it. Earlier, Axios reported the release plan, as we noted in Another Open Model, Not a New Leader.
If a deal did happen, Nvidia would be tied more closely to a team building open models, on top of selling the chips such models run on. That is our reading, not something either company has said.
What this does not show
- A deal. “In talks” is not an agreement, and the FT’s sources reportedly said it could fall apart.
- A price. No deal value, valuation or terms are given here, and none are stated by us.
- A takeover. Nvidia may acquire or deepen its investment; which, if either, is unknown.
- Confirmation. Neither company has confirmed the talks in anything we read.
- The full FT text. It was paywalled to us; we read the headline and opening line, and relied on Reuters’ summary for the rest.
