REPORTED: Ontology’s statements are quoted as reported by Bitcoin.com, which attributes them to Ontology’s X account. TSN has not read Ontology’s post directly. The affected ecosystem project has not been named, and whether it lost any funds is UNCONFIRMED.
Ontology has restarted its layer-one blockchain after stopping block production for about 41 hours, Bitcoin.com reported on Monday [1]. Ontology had paused the chain as a precaution over a security incident at a project built on its network.
“We are pleased to announce that the Ontology MainNet has resumed block production and returned to normal operation following an investigation into a security incident involving an ecosystem project,” Ontology said, as quoted by Bitcoin.com [1].
Block production is how a blockchain adds new transactions. While it is halted, no transactions go through.
What happened
On Saturday 10 October, Ontology said an urgent security report had raised concerns about a project running on its blockchain, Bitcoin.com reported. The team worked with a majority of its consensus nodes to suspend block production [1]. Consensus nodes are the computers that agree on, and add, new blocks.
Ontology did not name the project or describe the suspected weakness [1].
How long the chain was down
According to Bitcoin.com, the halt ran from about 16:43 UTC (17:43 BST) on Saturday 10 October to about 09:57 UTC (10:57 BST) on Monday 12 October, about 41 hours [1]. The Defiant described it as a “nearly 43-hour” halt [2].
No losses from the network itself, Ontology says
Ontology said, as quoted by Bitcoin.com: “Ontology’s core infrastructure remains safe, with no funds lost from the Ontology network itself. The temporary suspension was a precautionary measure taken in coordination with consensus nodes to support the investigation and mitigate potential risks” [1].
That statement covers the Ontology network only. Both Bitcoin.com and The Defiant noted that it does not say whether the unnamed project, or its users, lost funds [1][2].
Exchanges paused transfers
Some exchanges, including Bitget and South Korea’s Coinone, suspended deposits and withdrawals of Ontology-network assets during the halt, Bitcoin.com reported [1].
Second halt in about six weeks
This is Ontology’s second security-related halt in about six weeks. The chain stopped producing blocks on 31 August after a security alert and restarted around 2 September, after fixes and a required software upgrade, Bitcoin.com reported [1].
What we don’t know yet
- Which ecosystem project was affected.
- Whether that project or its users lost funds.
- What the security problem was. Bitcoin.com said no technical explanation or detailed post-mortem came with the restart announcement [1].
