Sabi Raises $50 Million for a Cap That Reads Brain Signals. It Isn’t Out Yet

Sabi, a start-up building a baseball cap that reads brain signals and turns them into commands for AI, announced a $50 million seed round on 9 October 2026. The raise is confirmed. The cap is not on sale, and what it can do comes from the company’s own statements. TSN gives no health advice and no investment advice.

The funding

Confirmed (Sabi’s announcement). Sabi said it “has raised a $50 million seed round, led by Khosla Ventures”. Accel, Initialized Capital, Kevin Weil (OpenAI’s former chief product officer), DST Global, Collaborative Fund and Ascend also took part [1]. Sabi says the money will go on its dataset, custom chip, early devices and hiring [1].

Reported. Forbes says the round “values the company at $600 million, according to a person familiar with the deal”. Sabi’s announcement gives no valuation [1][2].

What the cap is meant to do

Company claims. Sabi describes its first product as a cap with sensors that “read neural signals through hair without gel, surgery or direct contact with the scalp” [1]. It says it “is developing the cap” to turn imagined speech into text on a connected screen, and a trained mental command into a prompt for an AI assistant [1].

Forbes describes a prototype “lined with up to 100,000 sensors, each of them a one-to-five millimeter chip”. A model “trained on 100,000 hours of labelled neural data” interprets the signals [2]. Sabi’s own announcement says “more than 100,000 hours” of labelled, non-invasive recordings, which it calls “the largest disclosed dataset of its kind” [1]. That comparison is Sabi’s claim.

On accuracy, Forbes reports that CEO Rahul Chhabra claims an early, wired, helmet-like prototype can transcribe people’s thoughts “with up to 77% accuracy” in a lab setting, for people who have used it for more than two weeks [2]. That is a claim from the company, and TSN has not seen the data behind it.

On privacy, Sabi says neural data “is encrypted beginning at the sensor” and that its system is designed to run on that data while it stays encrypted [1]. That is a design claim.

Where it stands

Unreleased. Forbes says the cap “won’t be available until next year” and that Sabi plans to demo it at CES in January 2027 [2]. Sabi’s announcement says it “plans to demonstrate early versions of these interactions at CES 2027” and is “preparing units for members of its early-access waitlist” [1]. These are plans.

Forbes calls the concept “nascent and largely unproven”. It quotes Nicholas Hatsopoulos, a University of Chicago neurology professor, who says signals filtered through the skull and scalp are of lower quality, and that getting reliable results directly from the brain “seems like a long stretch” [2]. Investor Vinod Khosla says early versions “won’t be perfect” [2].

The X post

The credited post (16:47 BST on 9 October) matches the sources on the $50 million, the Khosla lead, up to 100,000 sensors, the 100,000 hours of data and the CES 2027 preview. It goes beyond the primary evidence by saying the chip is “custom fabbed by TSMC”. Neither Sabi’s announcement nor the Forbes text TSN read says that, so TSN has not repeated it [3].

What this does not prove

  • That the cap works as described. Capability and accuracy claims are the company’s, from a lab setting with an earlier prototype [1][2].
  • That the valuation is confirmed. It is Forbes’s report from an unnamed source [2].
  • That a product will ship or when. CES 2027 is a planned demo, not a release date [1][2].
  • Anything about health or safety. Sabi’s materials are about a consumer AI interface, and TSN makes no medical claims.

The Bottom Line

Sabi has confirmed a $50 million seed round led by Khosla Ventures. A $600 million valuation is reported, not confirmed. The cap that reads brain signals is unreleased, with a demo planned for CES 2027, and its abilities are the company’s claims that outside experts have questioned.
