Sparkassen Begin Crypto Trading in Their Apps, dpa Reports

Germany’s savings banks are starting to offer crypto trading inside the existing Sparkasse app, Handelsblatt reported on 19 October 2026, citing the German Press Agency (dpa) and statements from the Deutscher Sparkassen- und Giroverband (DSGV) and DekaBank. For retail customers at the first participating Sparkassen, that means buying and selling selected coins through a familiar banking app rather than a separate exchange — on an execution-only basis, with an explicit total-loss warning.

The story is a reported roll-out, not a single national launch day. Each Sparkasse decides when to go live; DSGV told dpa that 30 to 40 more institutions should join each month, with a large share of interested banks targeted for the first half of 2027.

In brief

  • Handelsblatt (dpa) reports that from 19 October 2026 the first participating Sparkassen customers can trade crypto in the Sparkasse app via DekaBank.
  • Coins named: Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple (XRP), Solana and Polygon; custody by DekaBank with Börse Stuttgart; fee €0.99 per order (DekaBank).
  • Still unknown: how many Sparkassen went live on day one; DSGV calls crypto highly speculative and warns of total loss.

How the offer is supposed to work

According to the dpa account relayed by Handelsblatt, the product is aimed at customers who want to buy, sell and hold crypto themselves. Broad advice or active promotion by the Sparkassen is “not envisaged” (translated from the German: „Eine Beratung oder aktive Bewerbung durch die Sparkassen in der Breite ist nicht vorgesehen.“). A securities account is not strictly required.

Custody sits with DekaBank in cooperation with Börse Stuttgart. Joachim Schmalzl, a DSGV executive board member, told dpa that there is no single nationwide start date: “When a Sparkasse starts is up to it” (translated). He said interest in the group is strong, more institutions will join week by week, and the aim is to have a large part of interested Sparkassen connected in the first half of 2027.

That gradual schedule matters for anyone expecting every local Sparkasse branch app to flip on the same Monday. The report does not give a day-one count of live banks.

Why the banks are moving — and what they warn

Handelsblatt notes that smartphone banks such as N26, Trade Republic and Revolut have offered Bitcoin and similar assets for some time, and that cooperative Volksbanken have also entered the market. Sparkassen had long been cautious because of volatility and risk, the report says; Schmalzl told dpa the decisive factors were customer demand and a reliable European legal framework.

Even so, DSGV’s public line remains stark. Crypto assets remain “highly speculative investments” from the Sparkassen’s point of view (translated from „hochspekulative Anlagen“), and customers are expressly pointed to strong price swings and “the risk of a total loss” („das Risiko eines Totalverlusts“). For broad, long-term wealth building, the association still puts securities, savings plans and advice first.

Our read

This is Germany’s largest retail-banking network edging into crypto under a regulated custody wrapper — and doing it with a compliance-heavy disclaimer rather than a growth marketing campaign. For AML and conduct supervisors, the interesting questions are onboarding checks, travel-rule style transfer controls and how “execution-only” is policed in-app when customers chase volatile tokens. Watch the H1 2027 attachment target and any BaFin or DSGV follow-up on how many houses are actually live.
