AI Companion Tolan Reportedly Raises $30M From USV, Khosla and Homebrew

Tolan, the app that offers an AI companion to help people manage daily tasks, relationships and emotions, has raised $30 million, TechCrunch reported on 19 October 2026, citing a report by Upstarts Media. Investors in the round include Union Square Ventures, Khosla Ventures and Homebrew, and the money doubles the total Tolan has raised to date. For a category littered with flops and legal risk, it is a sign that investors still see a business in AI companionship done carefully.

Tolan has not disclosed its new valuation. According to the reports, it is above the company’s previous $120 million valuation, and data provider PitchBook estimates it at more than $268 million, with what it calls “medium confidence”. That figure is PitchBook’s estimate, not a number from Tolan.

In brief

  • Tolan reportedly raised $30 million from investors including Union Square Ventures, Khosla Ventures and Homebrew, doubling its total funding (TechCrunch, citing Upstarts Media).
  • The valuation is undisclosed; PitchBook estimates it at more than $268 million with “medium confidence”, up from a previous $120 million.
  • Tolan says it has more than 250,000 active users; that and its revenue figures are company claims.

What Tolan says about its users

Users talk to Tolan through a cartoonish character meant to offer support and help them get through their to-do lists. The company makes money from tiered memberships, which are needed to unlock all features, and it told Upstarts Media that its annual recurring revenue is now in the “double-digit millions”.

Tolan also claims more than 250,000 active users, who have had more than 70 million conversations over the past year. Its team told the outlet that about 70% of users are women and 40% are parents. These figures come from the company and have not been independently verified.

TechCrunch adds, anecdotally, that the app is said to appeal particularly to neurodivergent people, who may benefit from extra support with emotions or organising tasks.

A tricky market to win

The raise comes as other AI companions have struggled. TechCrunch points to the public backlash against Friend’s pendant-based companion and notes that Character.AI recently filed for bankruptcy after its founders returned to Google, with remaining staff moving to Disney, which bought some of its assets.

Competition is also shifting. TechCrunch says Tolan could face pressure from AI agents that help people plan and complete tasks, not just talk them through, such as Meta’s Muse agent, which has been given an avatar. And emotional-support apps carry real risk: multiple lawsuits have been filed against general-purpose AI app makers alleging that chatbot conversations contributed to users’ suicides.

Our read

Tolan’s pitch — helpful, not weird — seems to be working well enough to double its funding at a reportedly higher valuation, and paid memberships give it a clearer business model than many rivals. But the user and revenue numbers are self-reported, and the $268 million figure is a PitchBook estimate. The bigger question is safety: as regulators and courts look harder at AI emotional support, Tolan’s growth will depend as much on its safeguards as on its character design.
