Space Roundup: SpaceX Agrees to Buy Mobile Spectrum, NASA Goes Nuclear and Amazon Leo Nears Launch

Five space items from 8 October 2026, from a spectrum deal that still needs regulators to a crew safely home. Plans and goals are labelled as such.

SpaceX agrees to buy 800 MHz spectrum

Spotted via SpaceX (@SpaceX) on X, and also flagged by As Found (@AsFoundX) on X. The facts below come from SpaceX’s statements, Grain’s release and the FCC filing, not from the As Found post, which overstates: it says the spectrum “will allow” Starlink to become a major carrier, where SpaceX says it “will pave the way”.

Agreement confirmed; not closed. SpaceX says it has agreed to acquire “a nationwide low-band spectrum license portfolio of up to 14 megahertz of paired spectrum in the 800 MHz band” [1][2]. The seller is Grain Management, an investment firm, which says SpaceX “will acquire 100% of Grain’s nationwide 800 MHz spectrum portfolio” [14]. SpaceX’s filing to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) agrees: the licences are held through NewLevel IV, a partnership wholly owned by an affiliate of Grain Management, under a purchase and sale agreement dated 8 October [3]. Grain says the transaction “is subject to FCC approval and other customary closing conditions” [14], and CNBC says the same [4]. No price was disclosed [16].

Not SpaceX’s price. The figure “$2.9 billion” belongs to an earlier deal: the FCC’s order approving T-Mobile’s sale of this 800 MHz portfolio to Grain describes it, as filed in March 2025, as “$2.9 billion cash consideration” plus Grain’s 600 MHz licences [15]. Grain says it acquired the portfolio from T-Mobile in August 2026 [14]. That is the T-Mobile-to-Grain deal only; SpaceX’s price has not been disclosed.

SpaceX says the low-band spectrum “will provide a coverage layer that ensures Starlink Mobile’s signal penetrates through obstacles, such as walls”, and that it “addresses one of the key remaining technical gaps that will pave the way for Starlink Mobile to become a major mobile carrier in the US” [1]. SpaceX also says “most existing mobile devices already support this underused band” [1]. These are SpaceX’s claims. Plan: “Once we receive final FCC approval”, it intends to combine satellites with “an advanced terrestrial deployment” [1]. Analyst Tim Farrar told CNBC it is “still a very limited amount of spectrum”, and that reliable indoor coverage in cities would need towers on the ground [4].

NASA and DOE sign a space nuclear pact

Signed (confirmed); the reactors are plans and goals. At the White House’s science summit on 8 October, NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman and Energy Secretary Chris Wright signed a memorandum, “Accelerating American Leadership in Space Nuclear Power and Propulsion”, effective “Sunday, Nov. 1” [5]. NASA says a December 2025 executive order “directs NASA to develop a launch-ready lunar surface reactor by 2030”, which NASA itself calls “a goal” [5]. NASA writes “When NASA’s Space Reactor-1 Freedom launches in 2028”; the White House says it is “expected to launch in 2028” [5][6]. No reactor has flown. Isaacman: “We are entering the ‘Nuclear NASA-era'” [5]. The same summit’s medals and Genesis pledges are covered in TSN’s post on the National Medals.

Amazon Leo passes 1,000 satellites built

Confirmed (company); service is planned. Amazon says Leo, its satellite internet network, “has already built more than 1,000 satellites”, with 396 deployed over 14 launches and “only four satellites” deorbited [7]. Its Kirkland factory “has the capacity to produce five satellites per day” [7]. Launches on Vulcan and Ariane 6 are “both expected in the coming weeks, ahead of an initial service rollout later this year” [7]. Amazon’s Rajeev Badyal told Ars Technica: “I can say we’re weeks away from launching on Vulcan” [8]. Executive Chris Weber’s claims of gigabit speeds and an edge over Starlink are Amazon’s own [8].

Blue Origin plans a satellite factory in Texas

Announced plan. Texas Governor Greg Abbott says Blue Origin is building a campus in Hutto, near Austin, “with a $554,780,000 capital investment that will create more than 2,000 new jobs”, backed by a performance-based state grant “of $18,171,000” [9]. Via Satellite reports the 1.3 million sq ft site, “Constellation Park”, will build hardware for Blue Origin’s TeraWave constellation, which is not yet in orbit, and that the jobs come “over the next 10 years” [10]. Hutto says construction timings will follow [11].

Crew-12 is home

Confirmed. NASA’s SpaceX Crew-12 splashed down off Los Angeles at “8:34 a.m. PDT” (16:34 BST) on 8 October after “237 days” in orbit [12][13]. NASA says ESA’s Sophie Adenot became “the first French woman” to spacewalk from the station. A crew briefing is set for 20:30 BST on 15 October [12].

What this does not prove

  • That Starlink Mobile will become a carrier. The FCC has not approved the transfer, and the ground network is a plan [1][3][4].
  • That a reactor will fly in 2028 or reach the Moon by 2030. One is a plan, the other a goal [5][6].
  • That Amazon Leo is faster than Starlink. That is Amazon’s claim; service has not launched [7][8].
  • When Blue Origin’s factory opens. No construction timeline has been given [11].

The Bottom Line

SpaceX has a deal, not yet approved, for spectrum that could take Starlink Mobile indoors. NASA and DOE have signed a nuclear pact around a 2028 plan and a 2030 goal. Amazon Leo has built over 1,000 satellites and says service starts this year, and Blue Origin plans a large Texas factory. Watch the FCC, the first Vulcan launch for Leo, and NASA’s reactor schedule.
