IREN Proposes Redbank, a 900MW Data-Centre Campus Near Wagga Wagga

IREN, a Nasdaq-listed data-centre and AI cloud company founded in Australia, has shared early plans for Redbank, a proposed data-centre campus near Wagga Wagga in regional New South Wales. The project is at an early stage and has not yet entered the state planning process.

“Today, IREN shared early plans for Redbank, a proposed data centre campus near Wagga Wagga in regional New South Wales, with the local community,” IREN said on X. “Redbank is in the early assessment phase. IREN is working toward a grid connection.” It added that the project is not part of its announced secured-power portfolio, the electricity supply IREN has already lined up for its sites.

What IREN is proposing

According to IREN’s project page, Redbank would have 900MW of total planned capacity, with initial energisation, meaning first power, targeted for 2029. IREN says it would create more than 500 construction jobs and more than 200 operations jobs.

The site is west of the Gregadoo Waste Management Centre, on land that already hosts transmission lines, IREN says. It plans to contract new renewable generation, firming and storage to cover the data centre’s power use, and says “the project will fund its own network connection”. The cooling system would recirculate water in a closed loop.

IREN says “we expect to pay more than $200 million to the Wagga Wagga City Council, over 30 years, towards the community benefit fund, infrastructure projects and council rates”.

What happens next

IREN still has to submit a scoping report to the NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure, refer the project to the federal government for environmental assessment, and prepare a full Environmental Impact Statement. It is holding community drop-in sessions in Wagga Wagga on 4 and 5 November.

Capital Brief reported that the scoping study is due at the end of October and that the campus would be built in stages over six to eight years. It also reported, citing “a source familiar with the project”, that IREN expects to spend more than $10 billion on the development. IREN has not given a cost.

Capital Brief noted that Redbank is IREN’s second proposed Australian development, after an 800MW site in Bundey, South Australia, which is targeting a grid connection in 2028.

What this means

  • Early days. Redbank needs planning approval and a grid connection before it can go ahead.
  • Power is the hurdle. It sits outside the power IREN has already secured.
  • Regional Australia is in demand. Data-centre developers are looking beyond the big cities for land and power.
