Network equipment maker Gemtek, chipmaker Qualcomm and US internet provider gFiber have unveiled a Wi-Fi 8 home internet gateway with built-in AI. Gemtek announced the device on 13 October 2026 and is showing it at the Network X 2026 trade event.
What the gateway does
According to Gemtek, the gateway is “Built on the Qualcomm Dragonwing NPro A8 Elite Platform” and combines “Wi-Fi 8 Quad-Band connectivity, Edge AI computing, and intelligent software”. The software comes from Genix Networks, a Gemtek subsidiary.
Gemtek says “subscribers can use natural-language voice commands to manage their home network”, for example to ask about connected devices, performance and security. It says “local processing of supported requests can help protect privacy, improve responsiveness, and reduce reliance on the cloud.” This means some AI requests are handled on the device rather than sent to a remote data centre.
Who gets it, and when
Gemtek says gFiber “will be the first operator to deploy the gateway”, with “commercial deployment targeted for 2027”. Tom’s Hardware reported that gFiber’s 20 Gig customers will be the first to receive it.
Tom’s Hardware also noted that Wi-Fi 8 “hasn’t even been ratified by the IEEE yet”, meaning the standard is not yet final. Manufacturers are building hardware ahead of that.
What this means
- Wi-Fi 8 is on its way. Equipment is arriving before the standard is final.
- Your router may get an AI assistant. Voice control and on-device AI move into the home gateway.
- Not until 2027. gFiber’s top-tier customers will be first in line.
