Kevin Boon Becomes Mysten Labs CEO as Evan Cheng Leads New AI Unit

Mysten Labs is making Kevin Boon, its President, Chief Executive Officer, while co-founder Evan Cheng stays Chief Technology Officer and takes on leadership of a new AI business unit. Cheng announced the changes in the first instalment of a quarterly “Letters from the CEO” series on the Mysten Labs blog on 16 October 2026. No effective date was given.

The leadership change, in Cheng’s words

In “Letters from the CEO”, Cheng frames two internal changes as matching Mysten’s ambition on agentic systems:

  1. Formalising an AI business unit “solely dedicated to developments of agentic trust products and AI native infrastructures.” The unit will be self-contained with engineering, product and other functions, and will “run similarly to the onchain finance BU, which we implemented earlier this summer.”

  2. CEO succession to Boon. “I have asked Kevin Boon, President of Mysten Labs, to step into the role of Chief Executive Officer as I add leading the AI BU to my list of responsibilities as Chief Technology Officer, and he has graciously accepted.”

Cheng writes that Boon has been at Mysten “since the beginning, first as our lawyer, then as our President,” and calls him “a known quantity that has worn many hats and built trust in every facet of the company, during our crises and day to day.” The move, Cheng says, makes his own scope more manageable and frees him to “return to what I know I do best” — technical vision and leading technical teams.

The letter does not state when Boon’s CEO appointment takes effect, whether the President title continues, or whether any board paperwork has already closed. Those details remain unknown.

What the AI unit is for

Cheng’s letter is largely a product and thesis note. He argues that AI agents are taking on consequential actions — booking, buying, paying, negotiating, deciding, shipping code — and that the binding constraint is trust: agents that act reliably under human control, with outcomes that can be bounded and, where needed, proven. Mysten’s stated aim is products and services that let people and businesses trust agents, and let agents trust each other, with two outcomes: control (agents stay within defined bounds) and enablement (safe autonomy without a human in every loop).

Everything in that programme, Cheng writes, will be “anchored to Sui and Walrus.” He points readers to his Sui Basecamp keynote for a preview. The letter also cites Mysten’s collaboration with Google Cloud on a Verifiable Agent Arbiter (VAA) — described as an evidence layer for enterprise agents built on Sui and Walrus — announced the previous week in Singapore.

Commercial and regulatory colour in the letter (Morgan Stanley agent-driven e-commerce projections; EU AI Act record-keeping from December 2027) is Cheng’s framing for why “agentic trust” is a business, not only a research theme. Those figures are cited as external projections in his post; TSN is not independently verifying the Morgan Stanley number here.

Why the split matters

Putting a long-serving President into the CEO chair while the CTO doubles as AI BU lead is a classic “scale the company / protect the technical bet” pattern. Mysten’s public identity has been Sui and related infrastructure; the letter is an explicit bid to make agentic trust a second, parallel product organisation — like the onchain finance unit created earlier in 2026 — rather than a side project inside the protocol team.

What’s still unknown

  • Effective date of Boon’s CEO appointment (not in Cheng’s letter)
  • Whether Boon retains the President title
  • Headcount, budget or first product ship date for the AI BU
  • Any change to Cheng’s board or founder titles beyond CTO + AI BU lead

What this means

  • Kevin Boon, Mysten Labs President, becomes CEO; Evan Cheng remains CTO and leads a new AI business unit.
  • AI BU focus: agentic trust products and AI-native infrastructure, run like the onchain finance BU.
  • No effective date was given in Cheng’s 16 October letter.
  • Programme anchored to Sui and Walrus; Google Cloud VAA collaboration cited as validation.
