CONFIRMED: The ML-DSA-65 feature is in Mysten Labs’ devnet-v1.82.0 release on GitHub, published on 12 October 2026. REPORTED: The Defiant says Mysten reports Sui’s “first native quantum-safe” transaction on devnet. TSN has not seen a transaction record.
Mysten Labs, the company that built the Sui blockchain, has added support for ML-DSA-65 signatures in Sui’s latest devnet release [1].
ML-DSA-65 is a post-quantum signature scheme approved by the US standards body NIST. Post-quantum means it is designed to stay secure even against future quantum computers, which could break the cryptography that protects most crypto accounts today [3].
What is devnet?
Sui runs several networks. Devnet is a test network for developers, where new features are tried out first. It does not hold real money, and it can be reset. Testnet is the next stage, closer to the live network. Mainnet is the live network where real SUI tokens and assets move.
So this change is not yet available to ordinary Sui users.
What the release says (CONFIRMED)
The release notes for devnet-v1.82.0 say [1]:
“Adds
SignatureScheme::MLDSA65 = 7. ML-DSA-65 signatures and multisig members can be submitted throughExecuteTransactionand are verified byVerifySignature.”
In plain terms, the network software can now accept and check transactions signed with ML-DSA-65 keys, including multisig accounts, which need more than one signature. The release also adds ML-DSA-65 support to Sui’s Rust developer kit. It runs Sui protocol version 139 [1].
“First quantum-safe transaction” (REPORTED)
On 13 October, The Defiant reported that Mysten’s Kostas Chalkias reports “a native quantum-safe transaction on Sui devnet” and called it Sui’s first [2]. The Defiant added that “ML-DSA-65 account support remains off on testnet and mainnet” [2].
TSN has not seen the transaction or a transaction ID, and has not been able to check the “first” claim independently.
What comes next (Sui Foundation’s targets)
In a blog post on 6 August 2026, the Sui Foundation set out its plans [3]:
- Native ML-DSA-65 accounts are targeted for testnet by the end of 2026.
- Native account sign-in with ML-DSA-65 on mainnet is targeted for the first quarter of 2027.
- “Timelines remain open while independent audits and Testnet feedback continue.”
The Foundation also said existing accounts will be able to switch to a quantum-safe key using the recovery phrase they already have, and keep their address and assets, through a feature called address aliases [3]. It said post-quantum accounts will be opt-in [3].
What this means
- It is a test step. ML-DSA-65 is in Sui’s developer network, not the live network.
- Users need do nothing now. The Sui Foundation says the change is opt-in, and its mainnet target is Q1 2027, subject to audits [3].
- Blockchains are preparing for quantum risk. On a blockchain, an account’s public key is visible once it transacts, which the Sui Foundation says makes the quantum threat more pressing for crypto than for many other systems [3].
