Akamai, the cloud and cybersecurity company, has signed a deal to buy the output of rooftop solar panels across 27 sites in Singapore from EDP, the Portuguese energy group, through its Asia-Pacific arm.
EDP announced the agreement on 13 October 2026. It is Akamai’s first renewable energy agreement in the Asia-Pacific region, EDP said. Neither company disclosed the length of the contract or the price.
The deal
According to EDP, the 27 rooftop solar systems can generate up to 17,000 megawatt-hours of electricity a year. EDP says that is “equivalent to the generation of a 13 MWp system”. MWp, or megawatt-peak, is the maximum output of solar panels in ideal conditions.
EDP estimates the project will cut about 5,850 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent each year. All 27 sites are already operating.
DatacenterDynamics (DCD) reported that the deal is a virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA). Under a VPPA, a company does not take the electricity directly. Instead, it pays for the renewable output on paper and gets credit for the clean energy, while the power flows into the grid.
Why it matters
“AI is accelerating demand for computing capacity, but the conversation cannot be only about adding more infrastructure. We also need to think about the energy required to support that growth,” Mike Mattera, Akamai’s director of corporate sustainability, said, according to DCD.
Akamai aims to use 100% renewable energy and reach net-zero emissions by 2030, according to EDP. The deal also supports Singapore’s Green Plan 2030, which aims to use rooftop space for solar in a country with little spare land.
What this means
- Rooftops are Singapore’s solar answer. With little land, Singapore relies on rooftops for solar power.
- Cloud firms are chasing clean power in Asia. Akamai is expanding its computing network in the region and wants renewable energy to grow with it.
- Key terms are private. The contract length and price have not been disclosed.
