Japan’s Ministry of Defence has signed a contract to buy interceptor drones from the Ukrainian company SkyFall, Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi said at his post-Cabinet press conference on 9 October 2026. The Defender reports that he said the government is working to “ensure delivery of the drones as quickly as possible” [1]. The value, quantity, model and delivery date were not disclosed [1].
Reported: the contract is known only from the minister’s statement and company confirmation. TSN has not seen the contract.
What was said
The Ministry’s own transcript, in Japanese, shows Koizumi answering a reporter’s question about bringing in Ukrainian drones. In TSN’s translation, he said the Ministry has already concluded a contract to acquire SkyFall’s interceptor drones and is working toward early delivery. The “as quickly as possible” wording is The Defender’s English rendering [1][2].
SkyFall “confirmed it had signed a contract with the Japanese government but declined to disclose further details”, The Defender says [1].
The reporter’s question also referred to earlier remarks by a former defence minister that Japan would try Ukrainian drones “on a trial basis”. Koizumi’s answer did not use that word [2].
Interceptor drone versus missile
A missile is a single-use guided rocket with its own motor and warhead, built to fly fast and far. An interceptor drone is a small uncrewed aircraft, flown by an operator or onboard software, that goes after another drone, usually by hitting it or exploding near it. It is slower and smaller than a missile. Makers pitch it as a way to stop cheap attack drones without spending a missile on each one.
The Defender says SkyFall makes interceptors in several versions, including one with an AI module and a faster one meant for jet-powered drones. Which version Japan ordered is not known [1].
Why it matters
A government has said openly that it has contracted a Ukrainian drone maker. Koizumi also said Ukraine has built up more experience than anyone in new ways of fighting, and that Japan has much to learn from the “rapid feedback cycle” in which new drones with new capabilities appear every two to three weeks [2][3]. That is what the minister said Japan can learn, not an account of why this company was chosen.
What is not known
- Value, quantity, model and delivery date. None was disclosed [1][2].
- Contract terms and signing date. TSN has not seen the contract or a contract notice.
- Whether this is a trial order. The reporter’s question said so; the minister did not.
- Who will use the drones first. Nothing published says.
- SkyFall’s own account. The company’s confirmation comes only through The Defender.
